Hello, i have a question about how to install a driver with an immutable distro: Leap 16.1 RC.
On the non immutable Leap 16 i had to install the driver as always, from the hp website and run the script(hplip doesn’t work with this printer),run the script and it’s done.
This time I installed the driver on immutable Leap 16.1 RC,nothing strange but it’s not available from the manifacturers list of gnome settings(into the print section, the printer is detected but i can’t see or select a suitable driver for it as it’s not available even when installed) : is it possible to manually add it?,is it because of permissions/user group?
As in the hplip plugin? What model printer?
the printer model is: HP laser MFP 137fnw ,i always installed the driver from the official website because even with every single package of hplip installed it never worked,i used it connected by usb port.
Can you provide a link to what you’re downloading.
@mattF11 Have a read here;

So if you extract the uld tarball in say /tmp, cd to /tmp, then as root user run transactional-update run ./install-printer.sh note the comment at the end about immutable system in the above link…
thanks, when i have some spare time i’ll try it and see if it works correctly ![]()
Ok,i had some spare time to test it:
- The transactional update as a root user fails:
transactional-update run ./install-printer.sh,it doesn’t matter the file you run,you can usually install it directly with: ./install.sh (i was a root user at the install time).
2, I followed the guide but obviously adapted to my printer and it worked perfectly, your idea to put it in /tmp as and the github detail to seti it in the corret location worked, steps:
DRIVER NOT FOUND IN THE PRINTER’S LIST
1, removed the old installation with the uninstalling script provided in the tar
3. copied the file to /tmp
4. following the guide with these steps:
entered the noarch share where / where the ppd files are located, then as the guide said:
Modify this line in PPD file:
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-raster 0 rastertospl"
so it actually points to the correct path:
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-raster 0 /opt/smfp-common/printer/bin/rastertospl"
then reboot(i updated the system before for another reason but ti should be enough a: systemctl restart cups
I USED CUPS: the driver was still not found but this time pointing the ppd files worked and never gave me the “not found” error, print worked perfectly, thanks again.
Isn’t it listed somewhere?,if that’s not the case it should be on in one of the distro’s pages, really helpfull ad worked.
Thanks ![]()
The joys of immutable systems… I use the hp-plugin here for my P1102w printer, I just created an rpm to step through the install, just had to manually set the hplip.state file after a reboot on Aeon when I ran it.
this was the only thing left for me,i don’t feel a difference in using immutable leap over leap but the reduced mantainance and othe things are really comfy, set and forget even more than traditional leap.
