I though i would try out Clamav. After installation and a reboot, As su I issued freshclam.
ClamAV update process started at Mon Apr 18 22:29:22 2011
Downloading main.cvd 72%]
the time at that point is 23:32 for 19 MB
The download is so slow that I wonder if Clamav is really meant to be used.

-=welcome=- new poster…
but, you give so very little information i wouldn’t know where to
start…i don’t know if you have a network problem, and if so if it is
in your corporate networks proxy setup, or in your ISPs filtering, or
inside your machine with a mis-configured thingamagig…
did you review man freshclam to learn the command line switches
available for that method of updating the sig file…but, doesn’t the
documentation give methods/addresses to fetch with other avenues (like
ftp or hhtp)? *
how did you install Clam? how did you set it up? is it to check the ins
and outs of your enterprise mail server…is that a rack mount? is it
local or distant, in a hosting facility?
maybe that hosting facility has a network problem…have you asked them?
nor do i know if it a machine (hardware) problem, or a softwear set up
problem or a reading problem…

Via service (rcfreshclam). It takes about a minute here, except the first time.
