Do you read documentation? How?

Hello all,

to answer the documentation poll, follow this link:

https://connect.opensuse.org/pg/polls/read/jnweiger/42126/do-you-read-documentation

It’d be very helpful for us docu teamers to know where to channel our efforts.

Stefan.

why did the poll not mention the how-to section of forums.opensuse.org??

And what about “man” pages???

Your vote has been cast for this poll. Thank you for voting on this poll.

I have not voted, I swear…

Yes, that’s the confusing message that comes up if you’re for some reason not logged in. Don’t worry, though, you just have to log in with the same user name and password on the top right hand corner.

Nice you answered Carlos, but what about our remarks about the poll being not aswerable because it does not cover all possibilities?

True, not all channels are covered.

That’s my reason for not participating.

My chief ways of accessing documentation are:

man pages (the “man” command)
/usr/share/doc

i wish i could rescind my vote, because lacking the full range of
documentation the poll is so flawed as to be worthless as a planning
tool to help direct “docu teamers” to know where to channel their efforts…

It looks like they expanded the options, because man pages/RPM-installed
doc appear on the list when I look.

That will result in realy trustworthy poll results. Changing the rules on the way. We have a case at the moment in the Netherlands of a “scientist” cheeting his results into what he wanted. :frowning:

In fact, creating a good poll is something that even professionals in he bussiness fail to realy suceed in. Because they often lack the imagination of all the possibilities all people in the world have to do things different.

I hate polls. >:)

It was changed relatively early it seems, but yes, in general once a
survey has been put together it should run as is - or better, be designed
well up-front.

I hear you - it’s not always as simple as “which of the following…” -
you have to start with what type of information you’re looking for (not a
predetermined result, but what the results should indicate) and then
construct your questions so they provide the data you want/need.

I see far too many surveys that ask a single question (usually something
that’s already been asked a million times before, like “what’s the best
DE to use?” - one of my pet peeves when it comes to polls and surveys)
rather than asking /why/ you use a particular DE (to continue the
example).

For the openSUSE Doc team, I would have been looking at narrowing the
selections to content they create - they don’t (AFAIK) generally create
man/info pages for packages, so I don’t know that those are necessarily
answers that they needed to add. The purpose of the poll was unclear IMO

  • if the purpose was to help them focus on creation of content in a
particular venue they do create content for, then there should be
questions (and it almost certainly would take more than one) about those
content areas, and the question should focus on the content, the
readability, organization, and how easy it is to navigate/find
information the user is looking for.

You will not be surprised that I am completley with you

That’s after I voted. It’s violating a guideline on polls: don’t change after publication, or results will become useless.

You need a pre-poll.

But the poll isn’t about “you” :). The pollster may not have been interested or engaged in those sources. BTW, I often use man pages and /usr/share/doc.

I have voted now.

Surprisingly few have voted.

I suspect that is because when you follow the link, there is no poll there. You have to first login to the page at the poll site before you see the poll (same user/password as opensuse forums).

They could have designed that better, so that when you are logged into the forum you are automatically logged in for the poll.

Me too.

Surprisingly few have voted… They could have designed that better, so that when you are logged into the forum you are automatically logged in for the poll.
That could be down to the Connect s/w on trial for the project’s social networking.

Sure, and like you and I both said, it’s important to know what you want
to answer before putting together a poll or survey, and then craft
questions that help you with information that answers your need.
