Do I need HPLIP?

Coming from an old SuSE 10.2, I now see that with 11.3 in the system tray a program called HPLIP is running, which obviously deals with HP devices.

Do I need this to operate my HP printer (no matter what model)?

How can I disable it, having a printer of a different manufacturer?

Can I disable it even when using an HP printer?

It used to be among the packages, so you could look for it in YaST and uninstall it if it’s there. AFAIK it’s not absolutely necessary, not even if you do have a HP printer. On the other hand, it autodetects certain scanners and fingerprint readers, so if you own one, it might be a good idea to keep it.
