How do I fix the desktop applet to work?

thanks
John Kilbert

you shouldnt be using the applet for updating TW (i dont know why its included). sudo zypper dup --no-allow-vendor-change is the correct way. If you dont use this you will eventually break your system (the number of packages stated as ‘not going to be installed’ is a symptom of this). KDE extra has just updated the gpg key which might cause the security message.

Correct. Using zypper up (as the OP did in the first post) isn’t the correct way to update TW either. In fact that is what the applet/Packgekit tries to emulate.

Thanks,I was not aware that the applet was not used in TW.
How can I ensure I have the correct repo’s selected, and correct system packages to fix the 'the following x packages will not be installed issue?

I should say you begin with posting the repo list, else nobody can comment.

zypper lr -d

not quite sure i understand the question, but to explain.
the sudo zypper dup --no-allow-vendor-change will do a distro upgrade but maintain all packages on original repos (unless unavoidable) so you can use with all relevant repos enabled. The non installed packages are a direct result of zypper up (it is not allowed to delete packages). If you have a separate problem with your repos you would need to post the repo list and problem.

you may have some problems the first time you run this if you have been using zypper up for a while, i.e. requests to change vendor when original package no longer exists.

thanks here is the repo list

I am wondering why some packages were not being updater by zypper -up; as I use them often especially chromium, mediainfo, kshutdown etc… Once this happened to me in the past, I seem to remember I had to “switch packages to this repository” somewhere in yast.

That looks fine to me. You could however disable libdvdcs, because you only use it once. It is never updated.

  1. It is not
zypper -up

, but

zypper up

.

  1. There is no connection between the number of times yo use a program and the frequency with which they need to be patched/updated.

Contrary to your repo listing above, in this CODE part, you did not include the prompts, nor the command. Thus now we have a list of warnings, but we have no idea what you did to get them.:frowning:

Sorry, I did not include because I did not think it was pertinent her eis the complete fresh output:
I know that the amount I use a program does not mean it updated more, I meant that because I use the programs on the “will not be updated list”, I would like to use the newer version which contains bug-fixes, expanded capabilities etc…, but for some reason, they will not be updated by the zypper up command. I can update them individually (i tried, and it updated)

Thanks
JKilbert

your asking why you get “The following 101 package updates will NOT be installed” when using zypper up?
incorrect use of zypper up causes this problem directly, its explained in my previous post.

With zypper up updates only come from repos or vendor that the original package came from. So that list indicates packages that have newer version numbers but are not in the vendor you got the packages from. In any case use zypper dup to get always that latest even if not from the original vendor repo

In TW it is recommended to use zypper dup --no-allow-vendor-change in any case since if you mix version you can break your system

In Leap you should only use zypper up

Thanks for the clarification, I thought he was saying i neede to remove the “-” in zypper -up, which I did.

I ran as you said, and it will not update as I need to change vendors, Is it is OK to change vendors?

thanks
JKilbert

Problem: problem with installed package J7Z-1.4.0-2.3.noarch
Solution 1: install J7Z-1.4.0-2.1.noarch (with vendor change)
  http://packman.links2linux.de  -->  openSUSE

Note sometime a build number gets higher and looks like a newer package when it is just a build number (the last bunch of digits).

The change would be from Packman to openSUSE. If a media type package then always get from packman since it supports proprietary formats but opneSUSE does not. Soooo It depends.

Personally i would not worry about it if the programs work. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Bring the package in question up in Yast and look at the version tab at the bottom right. That may help you decide if you must have the absolutely newest compile made. Generally only the first 4 or 5 numbers mean any real changes were made and not just a compile number tacked on the end. Just because a program is recompiled does not mean any code was changed.

The problem with zypper dup alone is that it pules the newest from where every it sees it and this can lead to mixed version numbers for packages and lead to crashes or completely broken systems. I’d speculate that at least 30% of the problems reported here are due to mixing packages from different repos. So just follow the recommended procedures and don’t worry about version number that is what computers are for and with all the changes that happen in TW things may get out of sync a bit between reops/vendors but it all sorts itself out in the end. Just follow the path grasshopper

Thanks
I am one of those who in the past had problematic systems due to mixing of repos. I will just wait and see for now

As many explained while I was asleep:

You wrote somewhere zypper -up. That probably was a typo in the post and not in the terminal, but you should in fact not type that yourself, but copy/paste from your terminal emulator window what you did.

And several people explained very early in this thread that you should not do zypper up. Thus when you posted you got errors, it was still unclear if you got those errors with:

  • zypper -up
  • zypper up
  • zypper dup ----no-allow-vendor-change

This confusion only because you violated the rule to copy/paste prompt, command, output and next prompt. I hope you now understand why this is asked for.

I hope all is sorted now.
