Hi everyone,
I finally mangers to install Opensuse 12.1 (kde) on my Dell Xps M1210 - 4GB Ram, Intel Core Duo 2Ghz, Geforce Go 7400 using using the normal install initially using the nouveau which does not really allow to enable 3d desktop effect effects etc and unfortunately causes the screen to stall and forces me reboot the machine several times.
I then so proceeded to install the nvidia module via zipper as described on the SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE.
All went well. I blacklisted the nouveau driver as per guide above, then issued the command nvidia-xconfig, plus added the nomodeset command to the grub and rebuilt.
I then rebooted and towards the final stage of booting, (before login manager) the system threw me onto a console login and not a graphical one.
I then attempted to to change the xorg.conf via terminal logging in as root but the system complained that no such file was present.
The system also complained about permissions.
I do not seem to be able to find a solution to this problem anywhere in this forum, i am therefore looking to uninstall the nvidia driver and restart from scratch.
Any other advice would be very much appreciated.
The problem is that you ran nvidia-xconfig which created an incomplete xorg.conf file.
It’s important to note that openSUSE or any other latest version distro no longer uses the xorg.conf file.
Can you please post Xorg0.log? It can be found in /var/log/.
In the meantime, please try the following steps:
- Open konsole, and type: “su -” (without the quotes) followed by your password
- Type: cd /etc/X11/
- Type: rm -f xorg.conf
- Type: shutdown -r now
You should be able to get to your desktop.
I have run the above commands as suggested and then rebooted but still no luck. still presented with shell console and no login screen.
I actually re-installed the os from scratch and did not run the nvidia-xconf command this time but still no luck.
when I now run startx at shell login as a normal user I get this message and x won’t start.
CANNOT MOVE OLD LOG FILE "VAR/LOG/XORG.0.LOG TO etc + .serverauth.1625 does not exist + /usr/sbin/Xorg is not setuid if so either ruse a display manager or adjust /etc/premissions.local.
What can I do next? Unfortunately I cannot get an internet connection at gdm hasn’t started so cannot install anything.
All I can try is to uninstall the nividia driver and reboot.
Any other suggestion?
As soon as I manage to login graphically I’ll post the Xorg0.log file.
Thanks for your help.
Mirco
Panic Over.
I installed the different version of the Nvidia driver aka the 01 on the list and all is now working.
hello everybody again,
Unfortunately after rebooting, after a whole day of playing with the nvidia driver and it working very well although stalling at times, I installed all sorts of applications I need for the system I then rebooted the machine and was again represented with black login screen as it was initially happening as if the nvidia driver was not working again. the message displayed at the STARTX command was the exact same I have reported in previous post (CANNOT MOVE OLD LOG FILE "VAR/LOG/XORG.0.LOG TO etc + .serverauth.1625 does not exist + /usr/sbin/Xorg is not setuid if so either ruse a display manager or adjust /etc/premissions.local.)
What is going wrong?
I also un installed the driver again and I am in the process of rebooting without it to try and run the installation process again.
I am now presented with not gdm/kdm again and cannot start the wireless network manager to be able to attempt a new nvidia driver installation
Please help
First try booting up with the Failsafe option from the bootmenu. If that works, you at least have a graphical access to the system. Then get back here and wait for the NVIDIA experts or reinstall the gfx02 version - that one should be for your videochip AFAIK.

There seems to be a problematic situation with this card not only on

Eee PC 1201n: oS 11.4 64 bit | Intel Atom 330@1.60GHz | KDE 4.8.0 |

Thank you for your reply.
I have re-installed the 01 nvidia version of the driver and all is working again , desktop effects included.
I’ll give the other driver a try tomorrow hoping to get somewhere and the post again the results…

On fedora forum they say this card does not work with 290 but only with
drivers before 285 (I can not judge that I do not have that card). You
can try 275 by installing the hard way (download the .run file from
nvidia and follow this steps)

Thank you very much for pointing me to the right direction of things at least now I know it is not something wrong I am doing.
I’ll what for some more news but in the meantime I tried the other driver and it broke my system again.
The driver seems to be sending the graphics chip into spasm and it makes it overheat quite quickly.
Hopefully it is not something hardware related add it would mean changing the motherboard and I cannot definitely afford it now and given the fact that it is quite an “old” laptop i don’t think it is worth fixing it!
Fingers crossed…
