Can you tell me what the current position is with regard to playing video files coded in the Windows Media Player format? I believe that a DivX 10.5 codec may be required?

Just install the restricted codecs as e.g. instructed here (the first sticky in this forum) and it should work.

You shouldn’t need a special “DivX 10.5 codec”. There are several codecs that can decode DivX (or rather MP4, DivX is just one software implementation of it, the free XVid another one).
