Correct configuration of Canon Pixma iP4000

I have just installed OpenSUSE 11.1 for my parents and have some trouble with their photo printer Canon Pixma iP4000.

OpenSUSE did not install this automatically, but I managed to find a driver for this printer in YaST and install the printer. Actually it found 4 drivers for this printer and I tried them all. It does print, but it will not print black.

Anyone know how I can fix this? (the cartridges are not emtpy).

Have you looked at CUPS to see if there is some configuration there?

I’ve got one of those connected, but I can’t recall having to choose from 4 different entries. One thing to note is you will not get above 600dpi under linux without paying for the turbolinux driver - a bummer I know. I actually use virtualbox mainly for the purpose of printing off nice quality with the windows driver. I have had the best success with the driver from the european canon website (for linux printing that is.)

Best of luck

I’d second this. I had problems with my Canon Pixma MP500 not being recognised by Yast 11.1 (it worked perfectly under 11.0). I tried the CUPS configurator which recognised the printer without a problem and now Yast finds it too!

Well, googled your problem for a minute there, found a solution for an older version (10.3) so that might work on 11.1

Although I do believe Canon has its own Linux drivers. Maybe those work?

iP4200

It is working well here. Canon ip4000 connected to the router print server using lpd style printing with opensuse 11.1. It is printing black. I didn’t tweak it after connecting. There might be something wrong with your printer configuration or try checking the printer for a clogged nozzle in the black ink area.

I have tried to upgrade Glutenprint to 5.2.2, but it gave the same result.

I have also tried to tweak CUPS a little bit, also without result.

It seems like the cartridges do contain ink and I can not see any obstructions in the ink opening.

While selecting printer driver I could choose between “CUPS+Gutenprint (OpenPrinting LSB 3.2) v5.2.2” and “CUPS+Gutenprint (OpenPrinting LSB 3.2) v5.2.2 Simplified” and have tried both.

To bad that CUPS do not show how the test page is supposed to look like. I think I would have to check the printer in Windows to see if it will print black there.

There could be a problem with the cartridges. I will try to replace them and then see.

I think you will find that Suse does not support LSB 3.2 and so any rpms that you use must be LSB 3.1 and of the 32bit or 64bit relevant to your system; I am not clear if Suse has any plans to move from 3.1 to 3.2
