Console openfortivpn works, fortisslvpn via GUI does not

Hi.
In setting up a machine from scratch with leap-16 I find myself having trouble to get fortivpn working comfortably as before.

Using the settings for my connection, openfortivpn on the command line does work and establishes a tunnel that works: I can connect to respective machines. But it requires sudo privileges thus typing a password every time. (Failed to convince sudo by an entry in the sudoers file to accept an exception for openfortivpn).

Setting up the vpn connection in GNOME settings or via the NetworkManager Applet, I can enable the tunnel, the symbol for the connection appears in the top bar, but I cannot connect to any machine on the network and after a while the connection closes automatically.

On my other machine still running leap-15.6, however, this does work fine and stable and you name it.

I’d be glad for pointers what to look for.

Best,

For the electronic records:

This leap-16 installation happened on an old hp z840. I just repeated a leap-16 installation in a new kvm virtual machine on a Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 laptop and the problem persists, like it does under tumbleweed on a different machine.

Fortivpn using NetworkManager/GNOME system settings worked without fuzz at all in a fresh virtual machine running rocky 8.

This to be working is mandatory. With the support end on leap-15.6. approaching fast I seem to need to switch the linux distro.

Best,
