Connecting Network Printer - How?

Hi all,

Well, today is will be the first time I am going to connect one OpenSuse11 machine into a 15 Windows workstation environment.

That is not the problem, today the particular network has one of those photocopiers that doubles as a network ethernet printer.

I have never setup one for OpenSUSE, what can read up on setting up for one of these?

Thanks ina advance,

Heeter

have you had a look at swerdna’s site ? got a lot of good stuff there Linux HOWTOs and Tutorials: Suse Linux 10.0, 10.1 openSUSE 10.2, 10.3, 11.0

Andy

Your right, I completely forgot to check swernda’s site. That is where I get my other networking howto’s.

There should be something there for network printers.

Thanks a million, Delta

I used to install those networked copiers… in a pinch, you can set them up
as an HP LaserJet 5, using lpd type network connection.

I’ve found that with SuSe though, if you know the IP address of the unit, it
can probe and figure out what it is, and come up with the proper drivers
too. Most of those big machines are PCL/PS compatible, and also have their
own proprietary drivers too. (Ricoh!!)

I do know the IP address of this Printer, so it will be helpful.

How do I get OpenSuse11 to probe the IP address?

Thanks for the heads up

You may want to investigate the CUPS printer management utility.
Point your web browser here: http://localhost:631/

Also you didn’t mention the type of printer, but
if you need help with the Docucentre’s/Phasers from Xerox
or HP color laserjets let me know.

Great, GofBorg

Will be a that office in a couple of hours, will find out which photocopier/printer they have.

Thanks again for the awesome help.

Hey. It’s me again.

The network printer in question is a Canon ImageRunner400s.

I point the browser to: http://localhost:631/ and I see the CUPS configuration tool. There is so many configuration variations, I don’t know where to start.

I do know that this printer’s IP address is 192.168.0.5., and the Windows machines pick it up as //IR400s. It is setup on a “LAN manager Port” on the Windows machines.

Can’t see anything about Linux setup on Canon site.

Maybe I can mount it through smb, like I did with the Windows Shares folders. I did configure Samba on this workstation.

Thanks

Heeter

CUPS is the right way to do it if u ask me.
Try a bit more to find some documantation or do some epxerimets with the adress to input.
Good luck

Lookup your printer on:

http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting

they may have recommended drivers and installing information.

I haven’t worked with a Canon ImageRunner…BUT…I have had success in the
past setting up these types of devices using ipp and lpr. The difficulty
in using lpr normally is figuring out what the ‘remote queue’ name is. As
there is no standard naming convention. You might try remote queue names
such as lp, lpd, print etc.

Ooo, actually, I might have just found your device. Check here:

http://www.brooksnet.com/faq/210-04.html

In the queue name column that would be what you need to use for the remote
queue name.

Thanks a milliom, GofBorg, for the great help.

I will be again trying later this afternoon, my time,

Thanks again, for your hard work on my issue.

Hey guys,

I hate to resuscitate an older thread, but I am still having no luck with this Canon Network photocopier/printer.

Should the cups input be “lpd://192.168.0.5/print”?

I am still not fully understanding the Add Printer screen.

Thank again,

Heeter

Yes.

Working through the cups screens it would go something like this:

Location, Description…whatever.
continue
drop down select lpd/lpr host or printer
continue
Device URI: lpd://192.168.0.5/print
continue
For Make select Canon and look for similar model name on next screen or
Provide PPD file. (if nothing else works try HP and Laserjet 5 driver as
other poster suggested)
Click Modify Printer

What username/pass do I use?

The workstation user/pass?

Hey all,

I am back at this office that has this Canon Printer, it has been a couple of weeks

Finally

Sorry all about reupping this thread.

Thanks a million.
