Conflict during dist-update post packman repo removal

Recently got rid of Packman repo following the steps provided in the post:
https://forums.opensuse.org/t/migrating-from-packman-to-the-videolan-repo-with-myrlyn/196146

Among the packages obtained from Packman repo, the ones available in VLC repo, I switched “versions” to VLC repo. Others not available in VLC repo but available in one of the openSUSE repos, I switched to the openSUSE repo.

Decided to dist-update the system today, but got conflicts. Shown in images below:

How to resolve these package conflicts? I apologize if my replies aren’t instant.

You seem to have some package locks. Show
zypper ll

Additionally, the VLC repo seems unreachable again atm (at least for me). So waiting some more time might be suitable.

The first issue is that you have phonon-vlc-qt5 installed. Uninstalling this package should solve up the conflict.

@hui is right: phonon-vlc-qt5 and phonon-vlc-qt6 are the problem here. I had the same dependency conflict yesterday or the day before, and the solution was indeed to remove those two packages.

phonon-vlc-qt6 is recommended by patterns-kde-kde_multimedia (and required by patterns-kalpa-base and patterns-microos-desktop-kde which is irrelevant in the context of Tumbleweed):

Not sure which (if any) KDE application actually uses it.

I locked libvlccore9 because in addition to V3.0.x it also has a V4.0.0 which would be the newest candidate version, but it’s too new for the current vlc:

I am not 100% happy with this solution because every now and then there is a newer V3.0.x that other *vlc* packages require, and then I need to unlock it, pick the newest V3.0.x, solve and lock it again.

VLC repo seems to be doing just fine for me.

I removed phonon-vlc-qt6, phonon-vlc-qt5 and phonon-vlc-lang. Most of the conflict seems to be gone now. libvlccore9 still gave conflicts, so I decided to lock it for now. No more conflicts post that.

Here’s zypper ll post changes.

I got an update which again gave me conflicts. Seems like re-unlocking libvlccore9 does fix it, and I could dist-update without issues. After that, I put it in protected status/lock it again.

Don’t like the extra added step, but it works.

Normally there shouldn’t be the need to lock libvlccore9 . It does not try to update as there is a version conflict.

Myrlyn shows that it can’t update and zypper does not even try to…

:~> LANG=C sudo zypper dup
Refreshing service 'NVIDIA'.
Refreshing service 'openSUSE'.

Warning: You are about to do a distribution upgrade with all enabled repositories. Make sure these repositories are compatible before you continue. See 'man zypper' for more information about this command.

The following 2 items are locked and will not be changed by any action:
 Available:
  patterns-games-games patterns-kde-kde_pim
Nothing to do.

Unlocked libvlccore9, and now my screen looks exactly the same as your screenshot, with zypper refusing to update it. I will wait a couple more dist-updates and see if I get any conflicts later, as in the zypper dup previous to this one, I did get a conflict.

That is a “healthy” conflict: if you have the “stable” vlc installed, like most users should, you need libvlccore9-3.0.24, but if you are testing vlc-beta you need libvlccore9-4.0.0, so the Videolan repo provides both and Myrlyn refuse to install automatically the wrong version according to which vlc version is on the system and zypper highlights the conflict for you to choose, either keep the “obsolete” libvlccore9-3.24 or install vlc-beta.
