Computer freezing, caps lock flashing when Firefox under heavy load

Hi everyone, I would like to report a bug I’ve been experiencing lately.

Using Leap 16 with the latest updates, especially when using Firefox under heavy load (multiple tabs of Google Gemini and Youtube) the whole system freezes, with caps lock and num lock flashing on the keyboard. I have read it’s kernel panic but not sure.

SSD smartctl is good, btrfs scrub reported no errors, RAM has been tested it’s good also.

The issue happens with Firefox from the official repos but not the Flathub version. (seemingly)
Tried to disable hardware acceleration, no change.

CPU : intel i7 4770k
Gpu : integrated.
Ram : 16gb ddr3

Any input on this issue ?

Have a nice day all.

Hi, I’d suspect Mesa versions between Leap 16.0 and what is installed via flatpak…

Flatpak installed as user or system?

Can you show the output from;

flatpak list
inxi -GSaz
zypper se -si intel

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.

Flatpak has been installed as system.
Here’s the output :

As you can see I use LXQT, but I had the same problem on Gnome.

Hi you could try installing intel-media-driver maybe intel-opencl. You would need to check the logs after a freeze and reboot with journalctl -b -1 -r it is in reverse so the first entry is the last to be logged.

Hi, I reverted to Firefox from the openSUSE repo, installed intel-media-driver and intel-opencl. (Hardware acceleration turned on in Firefox, as default)
So far it seems to work, if I experience a new crash I will post the logs from journalctl -b -1 -r
Thanks for the help

AFAIK intel-media-driver supports Intel GPUs from Broadwell (2015) and up, so it should bring no benefit to the OP Xeon E3 / Haswell / 2013 GPU:

Interesting, is the change coming from intel-opencl then ?

Does clinfo work with intel-opencl? There’s a bug report on Arch around 2024 about compute-runtime dropping 8th-11th gen support, and today on Tumbleweed with HD 530 I don’t get anything reported on clinfo with intel-opencl.

Mesa-libRusticlOpenCL reports a 3.0 device fine :smiley: (OCL apps need an enable env)

RUSTICL_ENABLE=iris clinfo

Seems fine with OpenCL-Benchmark-Linux v2.0:
