I’ve noticed that the new Leap is going to complete remove X11, which still exists in Tumbleweed KDE Plasma setups. As far as I know SDDM is blocking the removal of X11 on my Tumbleweed. What is the de-facto way to remove X11 and workaround SDDM on TW?
the sddm package needs to be adjusted to split the X11 and Wayland components, so they’re installable seperately.
When will this be available for TW users?
When you get around to adjusting the package.
As SDDM supports Wayland and X11, there is no need yet to seperate it into two packages. As KDE Plasma started to incubate the SDDM code recently, the X11 support will be dropped from SDDM when KDE Plasma is Wayland only (also the name SDDM will cease to be).
More likely SDDM will be dropped in favour of plasma-login(-manager)
.
Yes thats the new name of it. It started as a fork of SDDM.
SDDM isn’t really going anywhere. Plasma-login-manager is a fork/extension of it, but there will be a form of SDDM that isn’t coupled too tightly to Kwin and the KDE Frameworks, for use with other desktops.
And it’s going to be a bit before Plasma-login-manager is ready to go, but Plasma-login-manager is intended to be tightly integrated with the Plasma desktop, much as GDM is for GNOME. I don’t know that it’s going to remain being called SDDM, under KDE’s banner, but it will still exist.

Heh, I’d like to do the same but the other way around. I’m really not happy that X11 is presumably getting taken away from me in the near future.
Wayland is fine and all but synergy/barrier/whatever-it’s-called-now barely works and that’s a must have unless I want 42 keyboards on my desk… so I guess I’m switching to like Linux Mint or something when it happens?
If your 42 keyboards do not work on Wayland, make a topic or use this topic.
What makes you think Mint will support longer X11 then Tumbleweed?
sddm in not needed to run Plasma desktop. Boot to runlevel 3, log in and start plasma session with “startplasma-wayland”
the tl;dr is Wayland’s protocol is too security focused to allow such an insecure activity as effectively installing a keylogger on your own pc and then piping the output to another pc over the network. I doubt Synergy like programs will ever work as well as they did on X11, it was a long long slog to get it to work at all, but there are some serious trade-offs that are likely insurmountable (mostly, that you’ll probably never be able to use it to log-in – so you’ll always need to have a keyboard and mouse per pc.
Mint will likely keep X11 around a cycle longer since their wayland support isn’t as finished as everyone else’s.
Desktop Sharing and using Remmina on GNOME is working on Wayland
Use the flatpak version of Barrier on the host and waynergy on the clients perhaps? I see my hyprland client connect, but that’s it… cannot connect to the screen.
X11 may continue to be supported, even if only via OpenSUSE community-support. If X11 is no longer officially supported, it’s possible those with an interest in KDE3, which seems to have a strong community-support, will be driven to step up to the plate.
However, driver support for X11 may become an issue, as drivers move forward, X11 breakages may begin to be neglected. Could XWayland become the only stable X11 platform, could an entire desktop run up in XWayland (I already have one app that I force to xcb/XWayland so that it can set and preserve its window locations).
Even if X11 is available, I’m not sure Plasma-6 will continue to be a good option. I’ve already seen one bug lowered in priority because it’s X11-only. This as well as the reduced customizations on offer in Plasma-6 (compared to Plasma-5), might force a re-evaluation of which desktop to use. If there’s going to be pain, perhaps adapting to Wayland-COSMIC, might prove as easy as adapting to Wayland-Plasma-6.
If staying with X11 is desirable, moving to KDE3 is also currently a strong possibility, mainly due to the strong community-support it receives here. Otherwise Trinity might be a possibility and maybe X11-Deepin.
I’m currently weighing up all of the above. I have an inclination to eventually bite the bullet and move to COSMIC (on Tumbleweed), but for now to stay with X11+Plasma-6.
@mchnz Umm, did you read the PSA in News section about Deepin being dropped?
Yes, Wayland is more security focused and at the same time some functionality is supposed to be implemented on a higher level so the DE, KDE/Gnome etc. but that is for sure still partly work-in-progress.
I did. I hoped the situation may have changed by the time I need to decide.
I’m hoping to defer the decision until the choice seems obvious or is forced upon me.
