codecs.... they arnt working

Hey everybody,
Iv tried everything to install the codecs for my system, the one click install, the manual provided for by openSUSE but no luck. All the files were installed correctly but alas no file will play… I need a solid answer. I have 11.2 GNOME on a 32 bit processor
Please HELP!

Have you tried working your way through this guide:
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

Please be patient. It’s Easter holidays. I wish I could help you, but I’m mostly into KDE4, where I use xine as a sound engine. On Gnome gstreamer is used. You could start with installing ‘ffmpeg’ and ‘k3b + k3b-codecs’ and their dependencies from the Packman repo.
Can you also please open a terminal window and post us the output of:

zypper lr -d

Also know, that this is a learning process for you. Take your time to get the hang of (opensuse) linux.

Oh im not frustrated… just wanting of my music that i listen to all the time. I have never had a problem with the codecs
Anyways heres the output

Remove those repos immediately.

Okay those have been removed. Some of those were with my Codeblocks IDE though? anyways okay so what next?

Follow my guide posted earlier
Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums

This will involve the removal of the VideoLan repo!!

I understand you don’t want videolan packages to conflict with the packman
packages.
But if you setup the videolan repo and don’t switch system packages to the
version of this repo, you can install libdvdcss from it and it will keep
this package up to date without ever conflicting other packages with other
repo’s.

Disabeling the videolan repo will keep you from updates for libdvdcss.

Chris Maaskant

I think this is a “risk” one can take.

Index of /pub/libdvdcss/

When was the last time libdvdcss was updated?

August 2008, a bug fix. So, with 11.0 and 11.1 you would never have had any updates.

Sure the OP has the ‘mix of Videolan and Packman’ problem.

I did follow the guide… even did the ten step troubleshoot and everything showed up… Am I missing something to get media players to use the codecs??

what formats are you trying to play?
I suggest try to install the gstreamer plugins, and xine-codecs.
If it becomes too hard or too annoying for you, try linux mint, as it comes with codecs pre installed and I suggest it over most distros for beginners.

Yes you are missing something.

You have repositories selected that CONFLICT with each other.

1 and 3 conflict with each other. They put codecs in places that applications from the other can not find.

Funny you should mention Linux Mint, I just got OpenSUSE’s grub to say hey there is a Linux Mint Partition and yes I can boot into it. But anyways okay so now lets just start over because I obviously missed something along the way. How do uninstall all those functions? No im not a total noob by asking that because I get a whole list of dependency issues and it asks to uninstall way more than I asked for. And then Ill try this one more time

@clgy15

Start over?
Just follow the guide and get rid of the repos we told you about. Post your repo info again:

zypper lr -d

And we’ll go from here

A very important thing for new users is to stick with the bare minimum of repositories. That typically means the 3 official repositories (OSS, Non-OSS, and Update) and the largest 3rd party repository Packman. Just those 4. No others. None. If you need an application that is on another repository, then add the 5th repository, install the application and then remove the 5th repository. That will prevent many problems from occurring that bite new users.

Then with those 4 repositories, and only those 4, install libffmpeg0 from Packman (you can tell packman packaged versions by the “pm” in the version number) which with its dependencies will pickup most codecs that you might want.

In particular, do NOT install videolan packaged apps for use with Pacman packaged applications (the exception is libdvdcss) as that will cause codec problems.

Doesn’t matter, you’ll miss one if there is one.
All i’m saying that it is not necessary to remove a repo to avoid package
conflicts, you just keep yourself from updates from that repo.

Hmm yes…
I don’t check how often there are updates or not, i’ve got the vlc repo and
packman and no conflicts at all.
That’s the beauty of yast, you can tell what you want from a repo and what
not, simple…

Chris Maaskant

Of course you are right, but in this case here, one might start with the most simple approach.

The OP does not even seem to be familiar with the most basic rules of using the package manager and repos, considering the first repo list posted with a wild mixture of 11.2, 11.0 and even Factory.
