Closing account

I would like to close my account, please tell me how.

@Ngungu you need to send an email to privacy{at}suse{dot}com requesting this, remember it’s for the whole openSUSE Infrastructure, not just the Forum.

@malcolmlewis:

What happens if, a (normally an older) member of the community reaches the end of their life on this planet?

  • Is there a “no activity” monitoring?

For the younger members of this community –

  • The people paying my pensions usually send an annual “ping” to confirm that, I’m still alive and well … :smiling_imp:

@dcurtisfra not that I’m aware of…

What would be the purpose of such an account state? Highly unlikely that a breach of the forum itself would occur, so it’s up to each user to use a password manager for the time being, at least until we can move to WebAuthn paradise. :sun_behind_large_cloud:

This is actually something that’s on the Board/Membership Committee’s radar and being discussed.

I can’t really say any more than that, as I’d most likely be screwing it up in trying to relay the information, but this sort of thing is being considered, and policies being proposed. It’s a complex issue.

“Passing away” is something which happens for every human being on this planet – after being born, it’s perfectly normal …

  • Actually, all life on this planet has a limited period of living …

It’s more than that. It’s not just the issue of a project member having passed on. There are voluntary removals, at the member’s request, there are GDPR requests in the jurisdictions where those are required, there is the issue of inactive and unresponsive members.

The case of a project member passing is just part of the discussion.

If you look at the most recent board elections, just as an example:

https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Board_history

199 out of 552 members voted:

This isn’t really “meaningful” as of the 552 registered project members, the ones that didn’t cast a vote may have many reasons, and might be extremely active in other parts of the project, writing documentation, packaging, developing, whatever.

But it does raise the question of what it means to be a member of the project. And of the 353 project members that didn’t decide to cast a vote, we don’t know the status in many cases.

Just to be clear, there is no current discussion of removing memberships due to activity levels (or lack thereof), nor have any decisions been made, this conversation is at the stage of “is this a problem? and if so, how could it potentially be addressed?” territory.

The forum software doesn’t store passwords anyways, and never has. We have always used a centralized and separate identity provider, regardless of the forum software we used.

Ultimately, the question of what happens to openSUSE accounts (whether members or not) is a decision for the board, and would be handled at the point of authentication, which isn’t the forums, bugzilla, or any of the other systems that you may use in relation to the project.
