Cinnamon Desktop has been broken for some time now. No display found just blank screen. Can open terminal and cinnamon settings but cannot get desktop to show. I really don’t care to get to technical but this is on six different laptops. XFCE works fine just cannot get Cinnamon up. Wondering if there is any time frame when someone will look into this.
If there is a bug report, there are realistic chances that somebody will investigate this. If there is none, the problem will remain below the radar.
I see this one:

Please check if this sounds like your problem.
Yup that sounds like my problem. Thanks you for pointing out that a bug report has at least filed.
It looks like the Cinnamon desktop is entirely community-maintained; I don’t see a SUSE mail address among the maintainers. That means that it might take a bit longer; until one of the maintainers finds time to take care about it.
Sure hope this bug gets eradicated soon. Cinnamon desktop reminds me of the old GeckoLinux back in 2022 or so it was openSuse based. I miss it…fond memories.
I more-or-less switched from Linux Mint Cinnamon to openSUSE because I built a new computer a few months ago and LM’s kernel update schedule is tied to Ubuntu’s, and I need a much newer kernel.
That said, I really do like Tumbleweed, though I’m not so much a fan of how stuff breaks from time to time and I wind up having to do a reinstall to fix it.
That’s why my personal preference for using Slowroll. A gentler ride. ![]()
Out of curiosity, which kennel version are you running with Slowroll?
Currently installed:
i+ | kernel-default | package | 6.17.9-1.1 | x86_64 | update-slowroll
On a sidenote here have installed on SlowRoll and Regular Tumbleweed. Both broken.
Bright side Cinnamon Desktop does work on Leap 16 but only in the experimental Wayland session. Some screen tearing when fractional scaling is used but otherwise functional. So at least I can use openSuse with Cinnamon. Personally here though I don’t care for Leap 16 much but that is my problem.
While this is not fixed, is there any patch or tinker that will allow me to use cinnamon on tumbleweed? It’s the only version of openSUSE that has an i686 iso, and I would like very much to use cinnamon on this 32-bit old harware ![]()
I can confirm that this comment in the bug report does get it up and running.
Comment # 9 on bug 1250876 from Andy Willis
I had one of the AI services do a search for me and found this: A Tumbleweed snapshot caused Cinnamon to start with a black background, broken window borders, and non-draggable windows. Errors in .xsession-errors included Gio.DesktopAppInfo is undefined and multiple GLib/GObject critical assertions. Temporary workaround: Comment out line 315 in /usr/share/cinnamon/js/ui/main.js (Gio.DesktopAppInfo.set_desktop_env(‘X-Cinnamon’)). I do not know what other effect it may have but is allowing me to use Cinnamon currently (the first time since September).
