Cellphone security cam

I have a few old cellphones laying around. In the past, I have been able to use a cellphone as a security cam. I monitored the phone’s cam on my pc. I forget how to do this! Is there software specifically for this or is it available through an app with another purpose?

From time to time, things have gone missing from my place. It’s silly. No jewelry or similar goes missing but cookware does! I used to laugh at a neighbor who said clothes went missing. Cleaning staff and maintenance staff have access to my place even if I’m not here. I want the cellphones to act as a deterrent. I will put them up even if they don’t work! My cellphones are Android.

@Prexy probably droidcam is what your looking for?

Droidcam was it! But I’m having trouble installing. Needs OBS plus a loopback app. Will work it and report back.

Droidcam does not require OBS to work. There’s an app that you can build (along with their own v4l2loopback driver that has some specific options for Droidcam itself).

I use both, and it works quite well. I have used both alongside both OBS and with the standalone app + module (I use the CLI version of the app, but there is a graphical one that in theory should build - I just never needed it) to use my phone as a webcam for video conferences.

It works great with Tumbleweed - but it is necessary to build their v4l2loopback-dc module with every kernel update.

The droidcam standalone app source is at GitHub - dev47apps/droidcam-linux-client: GNU/Linux/nix client for DroidCam

I will try this. I installed the app on both phone and pc but it will not work. Can’t find the device. Need to install abd. No audio device. No video device. Won’t connect as WIFI or usb.

Yeah, if you’re going to connect via USB, you need the Android SDK installed. If you connect over wifi to the phone, then that’s not needed.

I don’t tend to use the audio device support at all; for my use case, I use a bluetooth headset for the meetings.
