Still getting the “cdrecord has no permission to open the device” error when trying to burn an iso image to a DVD-RW.
I did yet another clean install of openSUSE 11.2 64 on my desktop computer, did updates, added Nvidia and Packman repos (it’s not a repo problem as I tried it several times on a totally clean install), added codecs and stuff as advised by caf.
I updated the DVD drive firmware earlier today, hoping that would help, it did not.
My user is a member of ALL groups.
Drive is an LG GH22NSS50 (sata)
It all works (with the same DVD-RW) under winxp on the same machine.
Is it HAL or something else that blocks permission to devices?
I’m really getting sick to death of this problem, and would be happy just to get rid of anything blocking permissions to the DVD drive.
It’s odd that your system is trying to use cdrecord (which is a link to wodim) to burn DVDs when the usual program for DVDs is growisofs from the dvd+rw-tools package. What does k3b say about the availability of various backends under Settings > Configure k3b > Program. Do you have the package dvd+rw-tools package installed?
Yeah, I’m now convinced it’s a problem with my LG drive
Oh well, I bought the cheapest one I could because I’m short of cash. The thing is the cheapest DVD reader was €18 and this DVD burner was only €21, so it was a waste of money getting just a reader.
Well, it was a waste of money anyway by the look of things. Oh well.
K3B has a green tick near each item, I did a screenshot cos I really didn’t want to type all that lot in -
I tried to force it to use growisofs (that is listed as an option) but that also failed with a different error message (can’t remember sorry).

PS I forgot to say - This desktop system is brand new, I bought the parts on the 23rd December and everything is new. The sad thing is that it all works perfectly under winxp :(.

I initially installed the 32Bit version of OpenSUSE 11.2 desktop but after having some trouble with sound, i decided i might install the 64-bit version so downloaded the iso, md5sum checked it and started a burn.
About 30 second into the burn, I hit exactly the same problem with the cdrecord has no permission, blah, blah. I’ve now coastered 4 different DVD’s in 4 attempts.
I’ve followed all the advice i can find on the forums but no luck. I think it’s the LG Drives. I knew i should’ve gone with a LiteOn.

Try forcing the burner speed down. It sometimes helps on some of mine.
I have a LG Blu-ray burner from a Dell Vostro with recent firmware from Oct. 2009. Everything I throw at it creates coasters. I tried Mandriva 2010 and Kubuntu 9.10 - all coasters as well.
I can’t tell if this is a wodim 1.1.9 issue or a K3B 1.68 issue. I’ve read on these forums that most people with the same broken cd/dvd burning on opensuse 11.2 did not have any problems with version 11.1. I was burning away last week before the upgrade, but now I get coasters.
Should all of us suffering from this issue just be patient until version 11.3? Or is there a build service repo out there that might resolve this problem?
I hesitate to downgrade so I may just buy another dvd burner until we see some upgrades.

If you have not done so already, try changing all your k3b stuff to packman
(change of vendor). I will futz with the software for a couple of hours
before i buy more hardware. It sounds like you have spent rather a bit of
time already though.

Blu-ray seems to have some additional issues due to DRM. It may be (part
of) the cause of the coasters. I would have to vet a Blu-ray drive for
Linux compatibility before buying.
