Can't install openSUSE on PS3

Same here. I checked md5sums and it is correct, so the downloaded file is fine. I also burned using 2 different burners which work fine before. I also burnt using both low speed 8x and 16x. No progress, stalled after loading basci drivers like many of you here. I use full DVD PPC 11.0 distro.

I wasted 4 DVDs  but more importantly, half of my day.

Hi,

I tried 11.0 as well, but for some reason it dosen’t work with PS3. I tried 11.1 beta5 on my PS3 as well, it worked but it couldn’t boot without the DVD and it is very very slow too.

Now 11.1-RC1 is out and hopefully the Novell guys have fixed most of the bugs in it. I am right now downloading the DVD iso and will try to install it on my PS3 later today. Hope it works fine.

Will keep you guys updated…

Cheers!!

Well,

As I said, I tried installing the latest openSUSE 11.1RC-1 release on my PS3 yesterday.

Well the installation went well(and quiet fast too). But the same problem as before occured. The openSUSE cannot boot on its own, it just said “booting failed”. There’s where I figured out the issue with the booting.

When installing openSUSE 11.x on PS3 if you let the system decide the default partitons for you, it creates a seperate “/boot” partition(usually ps3da1) and makes another partition for “/”. Now this creates an issue while booting, as the system doesnot find the rest of the files required to boot which are on the “/” partition.

So what I did was deleted the “/boot” and the “/” partition manually and created a whole “/” partition, and no “/boot” partition. This makes the “/boot” to be on the same partition as “/”. And thats it, after installation the system will boot on its own with out any need to boot it again from the DVD.

One thing that I noticed though was that, even with 11.1 RC-1 release the OS on PS3 is way too slow. You may get frustrated with this sometimes. I am not sure if this is some kind of a bug or something. Other than that I think the system works well.

I am not sure if the “slowness” is related to some un-wanted services or programs running in the background. If someone has any idea on how to optimize openSUSE 11.x on PS3 to make the system fast, please give us some tips.

Cheers!!
Kiran

Slowness is due to the pathetic amount of memory in the PS3, only 256 MB. I had Fedora 10 installed smoothly and no added on stuff, just to see the same outcome. It is not any issue with Opensuse. About the boot failure, one could try the lvm option when install or use the suggestion of deleting the /boot partition, this is what Fedora 10 uses. I have both Fedora and Opensuse at home and like both.

It seems the only way is to create just one / partition and a swap partition.

I did so with 9 GB for / and 1 GB for swap.

After installation, OpenSuse 11.1 is so ssllooww, much worse than Fedora 10 even though I have disabled many kernel services. It seems there is something inside 11.1 that needs to be looked at. I don’t believe with the same Linux source tree, one OS flavor can be much different from the other. I prefer the OpenSuse look and feel and some of its user interfaces such as the ability to select Boot GameOS from the menu and the YaST menu, but its performance is unbearably slow.
