Not sure what kind of VPN you want to set up but standard NetworkManager has good support from standard VPN protocols.
Try just the NetworkManager GUI and select Add new connection:
That will pop up a Connection Type dialog 10 possible VPN protocols, I have tried OpenVPN and WireGuard and they work fine and the NetworkManager is nice.
This is pretty good provider and they offer a basic free service if you want to try it out, but requires a subscription for more full service. I guess it depends what you want?

I found Nekoray VPN is forked by other maintainer, but he doesn’t provide any support info. Also I tried Proton before.
With OpenVPN what servers do you use? Your custom server or a public one?
I have two VPN “Lifetime” VPNs and both support OpenVPN, WireGuard and multiple other protocols but I do not see why anybody would need an another protocol.
On NekoRay Servers - NekoRay I see that you also a contract but the providers do not look too trustworthy at least they are not one of the well-know VPN providers.
