Can't change Nvidia driver to G05 or G06

Hi all,

The issue is years old, but I decided to let it be until G04 is discontinued. Well, I realized it’s due after my first tried online upgrade to 15.6. I keep the nvidia repo active since it’s officially supported (or at least not discouraged anymore) to keep third party repos enabled.
After upgrade my laptop booted straight into terminal. G06 was installed but X11 fails to start. I tried around a lot and probably most was wrong or in vain. It’s an Optimus and I messed around with switcherooctl (suse-prime was deinstalled) in tty1. I couldn’t even get the intel card started, switcherooctl threw some error message at me. But never mind, did a rollback, after further messing around removing / reinstalling G04, G05, bbswitch and suse-prime I got back to my initial setup G04 + Intel with suse-prime. I’m mentally prepared for a fresh install but I decided I want to solve the issue as I have a similar issue with my desktop. So it’s very likely a PEBKAC.

So, after a lot of story-telling, as Henk would say, here’s some facts:

As suggested by @malcolmlewis here: Unable to make my nvidia card work in a dual-gpu laptop - #7 by malcolmlewis I checked to confirm the card should be supported by the 470 driver. It’s actually even listed in G06 / 550:

Switching with suse-prime is working (again).

Whenever I try to install G05 (or G06) it boots into CLI. If required, I can do it. I’m writing from my desktop. All above info I got via ssh.

Side note, as said before: Here on the desktop it’s G05, I can’t switch to G06, same issue. It usually work to switch the driver (other hardware) by just installing it via YaST. Now, neither YaST nor zypper does it.

I’m pretty sure, I’m doing something wrong, but what?

What should I do?

TIA
kasi

Do you have any error messages in journal when you try to switch to another driver?

How do you perform this? It worked here on my machine to uninstall as example the G04 packages (don’t restart your machine yet), install e.g. the G06 packages. Restart.

The minimum requirement is, that the card is supported by the G06 or G05 driver. But as you already found at the driver page from Nvidia, MX150 uses G06 (v550).

Uhm, that’s a bit of a problem. Due to the rollback, journal has got some issues. I assume because /var is a subvolume and not part of the rollback. When trying to switch I’m getting this:

pluto:~ # prime-select nvidia
nvidia catched
NVIDIA modules are loaded
Logout to switch graphics

(...won't stop...)

I’ll see if I can get anything from journalctl with a new ssh-login.

Thanks for the fast reply, BTW.

Stupid me:

Jan 24 21:10:02 pluto.langer suse-prime[20520]: user_logout_waiter: started

Did it via ssh. user is not logged into graphical session. I’ll come back.

One more question: did you switch the Nvidia repo when you performed the upgrade to Leap 15.6? There are dedicated repos for each Leap version.

Does the switch work when you use this command as root:

prime-select boot nvidia

and reboot afterwards.

Sorry for confusion. Switching with prime-select actually did work. I’ll double check with prime-select boot nvidia

Yes, I have got $(releasever) to ensure the correct repos will be used.

That’s what I did and usually works. I can try again. It may be difficult getting the journal readings because of that glitch. I think I’ll try with journalctl -f via ssh while doing it on the laptop.

You may also try to do the de-/installation via terminal. In this way you get verbose output if there is any issue whilst installation of the newer drivers.

Do you use secureboot? Did you enroll the MOK keys after installation of the drivers?

Additionally the output of inxi -SGa is strange. There might be some issues with your installation. Your kernel command line looks really strange and contains contradicting and doubled entrys:

Secure boot is switched off.

Switching to nvidia worked:

pluto:~ # prime-select get-current
Driver configured: nvidia
NVIDIA modules are loaded
pluto:~ #

I’ll try deinstalling G04 and installing G06 with zypper, as you suggested. I’ll do it via ssh, so I can keep copy-pasting the feedback.

Whoops, I never did that. Could it be a consequence from upgrade-rollback issue? As I said, I tried around a bit…
However, the issue of not being able to change to G05/G06 is older. I’ll try again. Bear with me.

First step:
Removed everything G04 related.

I do hope libdrm_nouveau2 doesn’t cause any issue, trying to remove would remove 1169 packages along.

Leave this package as it is. It is absolutely normal that this package stays installed, even if you use the Nvidia drivers.

Thought so, thanks.

But you have a massive list of locked packages. That is for sure the reason for your issues. Show the output of
zypper ll

Also make sure that you either performed the full vendor switch to packman OR back to the openSUSE repos. Your output shows some inconsitencies of locked Mesa packages from packman and main repo. This could also be one main reason for ending at a terminal when starting your machine…

Ah, OK. Thanks. This may take a while. I got into that loop of messages:

This can’t be stopped and exceeded my konsole history. But zypper is blocked. Can’t start zypper ll from another ssh session. I may have to kill that process meaning I’m going to bork the running install. It was just after the first “…installing” message.

However, I may have to consider the fresh install after many online upgrades. But the thing with the locked packages seems important. I’ll try to get the info.

There we are:
Edit:

I would remove the locks on the Mesa and nouveau packages. Perform a zypper up afterwards. Look for errors. If no errors, try to install the G06 drivers.

The issue with the journal file seems caused by the upgrade attempt to Leap 15.6. There a newer feature was used which can not be read under Leap 15.5

You might get rid of the broken journal files. Be aware that you will loose ALL old journal entrys. But at least you have a clean start from now on, and you can perform new zypper actions and have a fresh journal.

sudo journalctl --rotate
sudo journalctl --vacuum-time=1s

This will remove all your old journal files.

OK, I’ll first remove everything G06 related that was installed already. Just to be sure. Then remove the locks and update.

Yes, thought so.

OK, I’ll try. Thanks!

OK, locks removed, journal cleared, zypper up done:
