that gutenprint works (mostly) and that you may well have downloaded a version of gutenprint;
OpenSuse uses LSB 3.1 and uses the rpm version;
so you need to work out if you have 32bit or 64 bit OpenSuse;
and perhaps download the LSB3.1rpm version (32 or 64)
to a directory on your home site: some folks set up a directory called downloads and direct downloads to that;
if you right click on the icon when you open that directory, and select “install with package manager” YaST should open, and when you enter your root password, it should then install this version of gutenprint;
then you would need to go into YaST and configure the printer I suspect;
let us know how it goes
since linux is about choice, I can mention that you also choose to go to this website:
I just downloaded the rpm for 32 bit (lsb 3.1),right clicked on the file in the “Desktop File Browser” and selected “open with package installer”. I signed on as root when I booted the system (in spite of the warning), and a terminal window “whoami” says “root”. Yet when I say “OK” to “do you want to install this file”. I get a message that I don’t have the necessary priviliges.
If I understand you correctly, you are running your standard GUI and programmes; as root;
that is something that is discouraged in linux; one of the planks of linux security, is to “run” as a “user”; and only assume root powers, when something needs to be installed; one then reverts to being an ordinary user;
I wonder when you installed your distro of Suse, if you were asked to create a user name? If you did, you should run your system like that;
if not, we should encourage you to create a user name for yourself, for standard usage;
if you give us some feedback, and we can go from there …
One more thing, the rpm I was trying to install when I got the error was: gutenprint-5.0.1lsb3.1.I486.rpm. Is there a prerequisite or something. The package install (of of the right click) failed even earlier in the process when the openSUSE11 DVD was not in the drive.
No, I ran as my non-root ID. In that situation, the right click install package stuff started to work (after asking for my root password. It seemed like the install was progressing (it seemed to find a few things (dependencies???)), then it complained about the missing rpm I mentioned above. That’s the exact point I’m at now.
I was once a systems programmer on non-unix systems, and got habituated to running with super powers at all times. I never depended on an ID not having super privileges keeping me from messing anything up. So it’s a comfortable habit for me to sign in as root. But that clearly did not work for beginning the rpm install process.
thanks for the background, so you have done quite a bit of work on computing;linux users recommend running as you now run, by not running as root;
my expectation would be that YaST would let you install the gutenprint; I am surprised that there are dependencies on that; my experience of YaST in Suse 11.0 is it can find what it needs;
can we check you have the repositories enabled please?
You go: YaST: software repositories; and in the top box of configured software repositories, do you have any in there?
one of our moderators recommends having four: I think his four are:
OSS, Non-OSS, Packman and main update repository; you add them by clicking add at the bottom left;
can you feed back on that and see how we go?
if the repos are set up, then I would hope that if one tries the install again, that YaST can go for the dependencies it needs;
that’s where I am coming from; others on the forum may well have other ideas
Thanks for the continued help. I know that in the unix world, people eschew signing on as root, I have worked in that world.
Keep in mind that the missing rpm seems to be gutenprint.rpm since I got the message"
"Can’t provide file /gutenprint.rpm from repository 'PK_TMP_DIR”
Anyway, in the yast “configured software repositoriues” dialog I see Oss, Non-Oss, Debug (which is not enables), and my openSUSE 11 install DVD (which was downloaded). I do not have packman, but when I went to a packman site I did not see gutenprint stuff.
Do I need to install gutenprint 5.0.2 or something instead of a specific printer driver??? HIf so, how do I get an rpm or whatever for this???
and click with left-mouse button on LSB3.1 32bit rpm for gutenprint; (assuming you have 32bit) I get an immediate requester that says: do I want to open with package installer (default) or save file; … obviously go for 64bit if you have that…
can you try that direct method; and see if your setup of Suse behaves like that?
If you get the requester; and click on the OK to open with package installer (default), YaST should jump in; ask for root password; and take things from there; (hopefully)
Thanks for this experiment. I did this and a fairly long install process ensued. I still blow up in the Yast printer tool when I hit the “configure” button.
and I still, when using the “printing” tool in the “application browser”, when adding a printer, the driver it suggests never works (it suggests the multipass 2500), and if I try to install a mp830 driver (the gutenprint ones are in the list of drivers and for my printer), I’m asked to show it a ppd file, and I don’t know where to look???.
Any more ideas (I hope you have some). Thanks for your efforts.

odindba;
I am full of gratitude! Going to http://localhost:631 resulted in the printer working! I had to do little there (it saw the printer). A test page worked for the first time (prior to this the printer NEVER responded to anything).
I do not know whether the right click and package install from the gutenprint site was a needed prerequisite???
I’m a reasonably competent programmer and database person. My goal was to install db2 9.5 on openSUSE 11 (that was easy yesterday, but I haven’t checked it out fully). I know a bit about rpm’s from some redhat experience. But here in openSUSE, there were 2 totally different printer config/add places (Yast and something different off of the “computer” button in the lower left, and the “other applications” selection. Neither of them seemed capable of working in my case (with what I tried and you guys suggested).
I have experience knowing that tenacity to solve a problem tends to always work (I’ve solved (or the Muse did it thru me) programming/software problems that seemed almost impossible, yet somewhere a solution appeared. I was starting to think this was one of these things almost impossible to solve.
How would a competent computer person learn about going to that port, and that the other 2 places would fail, and what it all means. I’m open for learning suggestions.
So thanks pdc_2 and PV for this thing working finally.
