There appears to be a problem installing installing 15.5 without a DHCP server [using the Net install image].
The install process does include a static IP setup, BUT the network configuration is reset to blank and the IP never is set ON the selected interface, nor route, nor resolv.conf;
Setting the network up manually DNW either, even waiting to do the config when install is looking for the main repo to download.
How can one use a static IP to install with the Net iso?
All static info was provide in the nCurses <?> initial portion of the install. Unfortunately, that information never appeared IN the network configuration (i.e. ip a, ip route, resolv.conf).
Thanks for that clarification - I’ll give it another try today (for some reason, I was having difficulty yesterday getting it to pull down the install system so I could test).
I’ve just tried this in VMware, and it does seem to work as intended here.
What I did:
Downloaded the 15.5 net install ISO
Created a VM with 8 GB of RAM and a bridged network connection
Disconnected the NIC so it wouldn’t get a DHCP address
Powered it up, and let it start the installation
When it couldn’t download the install system, I configured a manual IP address/mask, DNS server, and router
Connected the network
Started the installation going with the defaults.
The installer downloaded, and then I launched the GUI installer to continue.
At this point, I toggled to the available root console on TTY9 (ALT-F9 or CTRL-ALT-F9) and verified that the IP address was the manually assigned address - and it was. The installation summary screen also indicates that a static IP address is configured, and the correct (manually-defined) address is properly assigned.
Where did you download the ISO from, and when? I wonder if maybe there’s an updated ISO since you downloaded it that addressed an issue.
Beyond that, the only steps I can think to look at are what values you assigned to the IP address/mask, default route, and DNS server.
That is the exact sequence that failed here - however the network configuration on the VM did not update after setting up the static configuration, so it failed to download the installer.
I ended up building a full ISO thumb drive, so the install could get past the download step, … and the static configuration DID work properly.
Conclusion - a Net install may not work properly without DHCP, so either setup a temporary DHCP server or use a full install image.
Yes, I’m certain. As I noted, I checked repeatedly during the installation process on TTY9 using the ip command, and the address did not change at all during the installation:
No, it was not noted. You only told us about checking after cable was connected. At which point system may have acquired address via DHCP (even if it remained the same as manual values).
The proper test is to make sure no DHCP server is present to provide the address.
I have just retested, following the same steps I posted above, but taking the additional step of completely disabling my local DHCP server for the duration of the test.
The installation still worked fine with a static address and with no DHCP server.
There is a separate issue with Leap 15.5 not booting properly in VMware (I’ve duplicated this issue in a previously installed instance; one of the current updates seems to cause a hang on boot at the point the video ends) - the video stops after the system starts to boot to show that at no time was a DHCP server needed in order to complete the installation.
Right now, the video is still being processed, so it may be a low quality recording. My understanding is that it may take some time for YouTube to render and publish a higher-quality version.
