Candidacy for the openSUSE Board - Shawn W Dunn

I’m mostly just re-posting this here, as I know not everybody uses the Mailing Lists, or Matrix, so I wanted to make sure the part of the community that uses the Forums have the opportunity to consider, or ask questions, etc.

=============================

I’m announcing my candidacy for relection to the openSUSE Board

I’ve been a board member since 2024, having been appointed after the
resignation of one of the other Board Members, and would like to serve
another term, assuming the Membership agrees.

I will be happy to answer whatever questions as best I can, in response
to this announcement, on the project mailing list, or via any other
contact method listed on my user page at https://en.opensuse.org/User:Sfalken

Of course, I’m also happy to accept endorsements, if anybody wants to
make them.

Now for the copy-pasta, from my user page:

So why am I standing for re-election to the openSUSE Board?

  • I feel that there have been a number of things initiated during my term on the board, that I would like to see resolved and continued, including, but not limited to:

    • The discussion started on Project Governance [1]
    • Continuing to work on Unifying and Normalizing our Project Moderation Policies and Procedures [2]
    • Discussions surrounding the Project Name, and the Legal Status of “The openSUSE Project”
    • Being involved in attempting to represent the community in the midst of this extremely confusing and messy migration to a git based packaging and maintenance workflow
  • I feel that I have a better handle, on what the Board is, can do, and can’t (or shouldn’t) do, having served a term now, that I didn’t have prior to serving

  • The project is in a transitional phase, with lots of things changing, in a relatively short amount of time (ex. Leap-16, apparmor->selinux, YaST Installer->Agama, YaST2->Cockpit, Git Workflow) and while the Board doesn’t control any of this (and shouldn’t), I feel a responsibility to try and help where I can, to represent the community, as one of the board members that isn’t employed by SUSE or any other corporate interest.

None of these things require my presence as a Board Member to continue, but I don’t like leaving things unfinished, when I can help it.

100% agreed. You’ve done a great job at helping normalize moderation policies and procedures, as well as your representation of the community at the board level.

Happy to see you working to continue to be involved at that level.

I’m with @knurpht et al.

One of my favorite authors spoke of his “War against cliché.” Your war is against BS and you don’t shy away from it :joy:.

Good luck to you.
