I learned that Fedora has a Cinnamon DE and I came here to ask if Opensuse also has this. I’m tired of theming KDE. The best theme in my eyes was the Windows 7 kde theme by wackyideas and I had to distro hop to install it. When I re-installed Linux Mint for a quick test again, I love the normal theme without changes. All the other themes I’m looking over and trying just don’t give the same eye candy as Windows 7 and Cinnamon.

At least some packages are there …
There is a pattern installing the whole DE:
S | Name | Summary | Type
---+----------+------------------------------+--------
| cinnamon | Cinnamon Desktop Environment | pattern
And for those that do not like to look into man zypper
, the Pattern can be found with YaST → Software → Software Management and then from the View menu the Patterns view. Scroll down to GUI environments.
BTW, I have no idea if this is “like Linux Mint”, because I do not know anything about that distribution).
Neither do I, but the pattern includes e.g.
metatheme-mint-common mint-x-icon-theme mint-y-icon-theme
which looks as a good promise…
So… how can I install it? I can just do a fresh install of the Opensuse Server option.
Well, my point is a little hint that when people have prominent in their question “like …” (where … is not openSUSE related), without further explanation what that means, they apparently expect that people here know in detail about that … Which is of course not the case.
The server option is not a good start if you want a desktop environment.
I have not used the current installer recently, but there should be an option like “Generic desktop” or similar (should install the basic system and the IceWM desktop), then when you are presented with a recap of the software to be installed you should be able to modify the list and choose the Cinnamon pattern and that should select all the components of the Cinnamon desktop.
Ask here again if you need further assistance (maybe some Cinnamon user might chime in).
You can of course, but why. Just add it to your current installation.
Edit:
But like @OrsoBruno I guess I would not have installed a “server option” (what that may mean for the installation) when I wanted to use a DE. But I assume installing one (or more) DE Patterns will draw in the needed GUI packages.
During installation you could add the two patterns-cinnamon patterns to the software selection of the installer.
Or when you have already installed a system you could use zypper
or YaST
to install either the patterns or the cinnamon packages you want.
Can you give me directions for the pattern? I installed connamon with generic desktop but the mouse doesn’t work, I have to unplug it for it to actually work.
Are you using btrfs
filesystem? If you are, try to make certain to create a snapshot with snapper
firstly.
-Regards
May I ask. Is there a reason why I need to use snapper? I’m fine with starting from 0, so that I have minimal errors to be made.
Oh, sorry my mistake. Thanks for the correction.
Can you login to IceWM? Does the mouse work properly there? If so, that is likely a Cinnamon problem and you need a Cinnamon user to help you. Maybe time for a new thread with a catching title like “Mouse doesn’t work on Cinnamon”?
Please show (in code tags) the result of
zypper se -si cinnamon
What is the meaning of this ? How can the mouse work if it is unplugged?
Sorry about that, What I mean is that when my mouse is plugged in, in a wayland session I have to plug my mouse in again for it to work. The X11 environment is work fine but I’ll get back to it when I do a fresh install again, so that other people who want to use the Cinnamon DE on OpenSUSE would have an easier time searching for it.
The last I heard, the Linux Mint team said that the wayland support on Cinnamon was still experimental.
It’s our experience that wayland is still experimental, in general, which is why we avoid it.
Yea, I know, there are the “wayland works here” folks, but that’s a thin sliver of the percentage.
