Brother printer problems - new install.

Brand new install of Tumbleweed. I am a new user of Opensuse tumbleweed but long time Linux user - mainly Mint and Solus.
I have a Brother MFC-9330cdw printer, wireless connection.
In Solus it was auto-detected at first setup, using some sort of driverless protocol. Worked perfectly, no headaches. (Printer only, not scanner.)
No such magic with opensuse.
First I tried to install through yast printer. I found a driver for a very similar model, tried it and it worked, I could print a CUPS test page. Then I wanted to get the scanner working, it appeared I needed to install Brother’s installer package which would bring in Brother’s printer and scanner drivers. So I followed the instructions on the Brother website and ended up with a working scanner, and two printers - “MFC-9330CW” and “brother”. Stupidly, I deleted “brother” before checking anything. That might be the cause of my problems. Now the scanner works, I have printer “MFC-9330CDW” installed, it shows as idle, I can select to print a test page, I get a pop-up message saying “Document Printed. Document ‘Test Page’ sent to Brother MFC-9330CDW Printer” but nothing prints. There is nothing in the print queue. The computer connects to the printer because it shows as “idle.” I an use a browser, enter the address of the printer (192.168.x.xxx.) and read the printer’s toner levels and so on.
I suspect I have a CUPS problem but I’m stumped.
When I select that the test page failed to print, I get directed to /var/log/cups/error_log and this gives me the following:

I have tried to print a test page with both system>Print Settings and with Yast>YastPrinter. Neither works.

Any clues please?

Do you install the 32-bit packages?

libusb-0_1-4-32bit
libusb-1_0-0-32bit

Why would I install 32 bit packages? It’s a 64 bit system. are they necessary?

Thank you Sauerland, that fixed the problem.
I installed the first two items on your list, the third one (libusb-1_0-0-32bit) Yast Software couldn’t find, but I tried it after installing the first two and everything now works.

I’d like to understand this better. Why did this happen? Is it normal to have to add 32 bit packages for a 64 bit system?

The brother driver is 32 bit, see i586 in the name of the rpm…

You can change the title of the thread in your final reply to mark it as such, but in general we don’t do that here. Anyway, good to read of your success with this. :slight_smile:

In other forums I have always found it a useful shortcut to seek out threads that lead to a successful outcome.

Oh man, thank you for this thread. Been at this for about an hour. I was about ready to shoot the dog, slaughter the pigs and burn the house down. Man… Totally did not occur to me to check if the drivers were 32 bit. The Opensuse devs really ought to consider installing the 32bit dependencies for printers. Jayzus-uh.
