Broken Slowroll - error and system hang loading USB Slowroll installation media

I’ve got a broken Slowroll system while experimenting, while my dual boot with Leap 15.6 is still working. Alder Lake Gigabyte model: Z790 AORUS ELITE AX, i7 and Arch A750.
Trying to boot Slowroll from Grub2 menu returns emergency mode message, cannot access to console, the root is locked, and the suggested enter to continue doesn’t work.

So I tried a to do a trivial reinstallation (upgrade or installation) from USB installation media, UEFI: Kingston DataTraveler 3.0MAP, which I moved to first boot in the boot sequence.
Unhappily loading Installation or Upgrade just cause a message screen
Loading kernel
Loading initial ramdisk
error: grub-core/kern/mm …
and shortly a full screen of messages and hang without loading the installation

No success with trying boot from hard disk either.

Other > Memory test run, but I exited after ca. 30GB (of total 127GB)

I have tested the USB Slowroll DVD installation media on anothre machine and it loads ok.

I have never had similar issues and I am stuck what to do further.
Suggestions are welcome?

I will add that booting the USB installation media worked the first time, and I tried a Slowroll Upgrade installation. There were several packages that required manual selection (solution 1), and a message told the boot grub2 menu could not be updated due to Grub2 for BLS. In a way got a selection to change this to Grub2 for EFI.

I mention this anyway, in case there is some issue with the Grub2 menu for Slowroll. After the update installation and booting Slowroll, there was a new login menu similar to that for Leap 16. But as I said, login to Leap 15.6 works ok from the dual/triple boot Grub2 menu.

NVIDIA? KDE Plasma?

Arch A750 Intel DG2.
Gnome

Additonal info:

1.)
I think what broke Slowroll, was when I experimented with was a unsuccessful install of the Tumbleweed version of ffmpeg-8-8.1 and codecs from Packman. Due to several dependices this deinstalled several gnome packages and other.

Now I’m able to boot Slowroll Advanced options - previous kernels from the Grub menu.
The green square login menu is possibly a fallback menu if the Gnome login menu is lost. The problem is that this results in incorrect logins. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login attempts from the console, also say incorrect login. Seemingly user and/or password (also root) also is gone.

Trying to boot the USB Slowroll installation media again, after selecting or moving it up from 3 in the boot sequence to top in BIOS. Next attempt to launch i.e Installation, bring up this first, temporary message in the tempconsole window (used now a photo):

Loading kernel …
Loading initial ramdisk
error: …/…/grub-core/kern/mm.c:grub_memalign:548:out of memory.
Press any key to continue

Shortly after, the whole screen is filled with messages and it hangs.

I have made some progress, as I am able to boot an older Slowroll kernel in Advanced Recovery mode. It comes to Give root password for maintenance, and Ctrl-D continues to the Gnome login menu, and I can logon to Gnome desktop.

The main issue now is that the Wired network doesn’t connect. I tried to disable Network Manager and configure the with YaST > Hardware > Network, but with no success. So possibly there is missing network drivers.

That is I have no Internet and no online upgrade with zypper available.

Just a thought; is it possible to run some “online upgrade” from the mounted USB install media, possibly how?
This USB install media burned from the downloaded the SR DVD iso with Impression. Trying to boot it cause the above mentioned error after loading initial ramdisk. I also ran the YaST2 Bootloader which seemingly should create initrd.

I added the mounted USB installation media as repo with zypper and then ran
zypper dup

Unhappily I have still to boot the new Slowroll kernel in Recovery mode as above, and the Wired Network still doesn’t connect after user logon.

@terjejh did you check the default boot entry matches. I faced a similar issue awhile back, see < https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1242144> it seems to pop up every now and again…

If your installing, suggest you try out Agama 19, I did a Tumbleweed install with it today (It does MicroOS, Tumbleweed and Slowroll)…

Try running inxi:

> inxi -n

@malcolmlewis @marel

I feel it’s a bit too low-level for me to follow the debugging details above and to change to Agama now. If burning an older known working Slowroll installation image that works I can do that.

In the mean-time I have removed kernel-default 6.19.9-1 and 6.19.5.1 and got 6.19.5-1 force reinstalled from the mounted USB media.

inxi -Sna

But unhappily the Network is still not working, just a [?] visible on the Network Manager applet.

If I select to boot using the normal Slowroll boot option = 6.19.5.1 default on the Grub2 menu, just a console screen with repeating text as follows appears:

Failed to execute /usr/sbin/su login: Permission denied
Reloading system manager configuration
Starting default.target
You are in emergency mode. After logging in, type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot or "exit" to continue bootup.

I found only Ctrl-Alt-Del working to reboot and then selected the
Advanced option on the Grub2 boot menu: Slowroll 6.19.5-1 Recovery mode
…screen text ends with

Enter root password for system maintenance or
Ctrl-D to continue - which bring up the correct Gnome user login menu

Looks like text files cannot be uploaded here. In case someone is capable to troubleshoot something from the output of this journalctl command after logging in to Recovery mode, I paste it in below:

Mar 25 14:57:51 localhost.localdomain smartd[1227]: Device: /dev/nvme0, NVMe error count increased from 4402 to 4406 (0 new, 2 ignored, 2 unknown)

Looks like your NVME drive is corrupted.

The filtered journal is not too helpful at least not to me, can you upload the complete log to https://paste.opensuse.org/?

@terjejh smartctl -x /dev/nvme0 should provide more information on any errors.

I can add here I also have burned the same Slowroll DVD iso image to a DVD disc with Brasero. Trying to boot the installer from this DVD disc cause the same error as for the USB installation image. I have tried to look for BIOS settings without finding some that helped here. The remarkable thing is that this has never happened before on this relative powerful and new Alder Lake workstation, while the USB installer boots ok on a legacy SkyLake workstation as previously.

Tried a google-ai search which replies:

The openSUSE installation error
`grub-core/kern/mm.c:548:out of memory` typically occurs during the boot process when the GRUB bootloader cannot allocate enough contiguous memory to load the initial ramdisk (`initrd`). This is rarely a physical RAM deficiency and more often a limitation in how the firmware (UEFI/BIOS) or GRUB handles memory allocation.

Common Causes & Fixes

* **TPM Conflict (Most Likely)**: Modern openSUSE versions enable TPM measurement by default in GRUB2. This process requires GRUB to copy files like the `initrd` into memory for measurement, effectively **doubling** the memory requirement.
  * **Fix**: Enter your BIOS/UEFI settings and **disable TPM** (or Intel PTT / AMD PSP) temporarily to complete the installation.
* **Large Initial Ramdisk**: The installation `initrd` is significantly larger than a standard boot `initrd` (often ~200MB vs. ~30MB). If the firmware only initializes a small portion of memory for early boot, GRUB will fail to load this large file.
  * **Fix**: Ensure your BIOS is updated to the latest version, as firmware updates often improve early-boot memory initialization.
* **Compatibility Support Module (CSM) Issues**: Booting in a "Legacy" or CSM mode on a modern UEFI system can cause memory mapping issues for GRUB.
  * **Fix**: Disable **CSM** in your BIOS and ensure you are booting the installation media in pure **UEFI mode**.
* **Microcode or Driver Incompatibility**: Sometimes specific CPU microcode or display settings interfere with the handover from GRUB to the kernel.
  * **Fix**: At the GRUB boot menu, press **'e'** to edit the boot entry and append `dis_ucode_ldr` or `nomodeset` to the end of the line starting with `linux`. Press **F10** to boot with these options.

@terjejh That storage device looks fine to me. If you ever do a fresh install, look at changing the LBA to 4096 (from a live or rescue boot with the nvme command) should give a performance boost.

Your Ethernet has an IP address, looks like your are on a private net with a gateway to the Internet.

Your journal shows that network manager is happy:

Mar 25 23:21:48 localhost.localdomain NetworkManager[1369]: <info> [1774477308.4085] manager: NetworkManager state is now CONNECTED_SITE
Mar 25 23:21:48 localhost.localdomain NetworkManager[1369]: <info> [1774477308.4091] device (enp7s0): Activation: successful, device activated.
Mar 25 23:21:48 localhost.localdomain NetworkManager[1369]: <info> [1774477308.4105] manager: startup complete
Mar 25 23:21:48 localhost.localdomain systemd[1]: Finished Network Manager Wait Online.

If you see still problems it is probably DNS, you can check with ping 8.8.8.8 that should work, to check DNS try nslookup forums.opensuse.org

On the other problems, this seems to me pointing at the root cause:

Mar 25 23:21:57 localhost.localdomain gnome-shell[3871]: can't init metadata tree /home/terje/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/root: open: Permission denied
Mar 25 23:21:57 localhost.localdomain gnome-shell[3871]: can't init metadata tree /home/terje/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/root: open: Permission denied
Mar 25 23:21:57 localhost.localdomain gnome-shell[3871]: can't init metadata tree /home/terje/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/root: open: Permission denied

On changing the LBA block size with a new install, I have multiple NVME’s and checked:

WD BLACK SN7100 2TB

> sudo nvme id-ns -H /dev/nvme0n1 | grep 'Relative Performance'
LBA Format 0 : Metadata Size: 0 bytes - Data Size: 512 bytes - Relative Performance: 0x2 Good (in use)
LBA Format 1 : Metadata Size: 0 bytes - Data Size: 4096 bytes - Relative Performance: 0x1 Better

Lexar NM790 2TB

LBA Format 0 : Metadata Size: 0 bytes - Data Size: 512 bytes - Relative Performance: 0 Best (in use)

Crucial CT1000P1SSD8 1 TB

LBA Format 0 : Metadata Size: 0 bytes - Data Size: 512 bytes - Relative Performance: 0 Best (in use)

Not sure if the Kingston drive supports LBA format 1.

@marel Looks like it does

Supported LBA Sizes (NSID 0x1)
Id Fmt Data Metadt Rel_Perf
 0 + 512 0 2
 1 - 4096 0 1

@marel
I have Slowroll, Leap 15-6 and Leap 16 in triple boot on this machine. Network and internet has worked for all installations, but not now on Slowroll for some reason.
In case it is easier to see what is broken with the internet connection on Slowroll, I paste in the eqicalent output from booted Leap 15.6:

I tried to burn the Agama iso to USB which boots, yes, but maybe I did oversee something on the first installation screens:
Is it possible it lacks the most important option that the YaST installer has had for decades?
Expert > Start with existing partitions

During testing a SUSE beta several years ago, I discovered and got avoided I think, that this feature was forgotten and left out.

IMO this is the most important option, especially for Upgrade installations but also new installations on earlier Linux disk partitions
