Hi
In the output from /var/log/messages, is it asking for firmware?

If so, then read this;
https://forums.opensuse.org/content/157-broadcom-firmware-needed-b43-but-i-have-no-network-easierwork-around.html

On my HP system I also installed the kernel-firmware package.

I tried with the indication from this link : https://forums.opensuse.org/content/…rk-around.html
but my laptop reboot by itself when I get to this line: sudo bcm43xx_firmware/install_bcm43xx_firmware_no_net

Hi
That’s correct, it should reboot by itself as explained in the article
notes.

So if you look through the /var/log/messages file, any more clues?

Is the package kernel-firmware installed?

I’ve followed these instructions with no success. It appears that the script runs but the firmware can’t be loaded for whatever reason. This is the /var/log/messages output:

Any suggestions?

The post here helps. It appears that for some Broadcom NICs the preloaded script doesn’t download the right package for building the driver. If it helps, I’m running a mid-2011 MacBook Pro and the referenced post is for a Mac Mini, I assume they are using one of the newer Broadcom Wifi cards so if you’re on newer hardware you might try that.

Good luck.

The standard script /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware only installs version
5.10.144.3 of the Broadcom firmware, which provides only through ucode22xxx.fw.
This device needs ucode29xxx.fw. To get it, download

http://www.lwfinger.com/b43-firmware/install_bcm43xx_firmware_5.100.138

After downloading, to install the firmware, then

sudo ./install_bcm43xx_firmware_5.100.138

I will update the script for openSUSE 13.1.

Hello,

The link above leads to a 404 error (I also tried with adding .tar.bz2)…
I found this thread because I cannot get to work my Broadcom 4331 wireless on a Macbook pro 8.1.

Any other place to find the needed, or shall I open a new thread with all the respective details?

Thanks and kind regards

Daniel

I have no idea what happened to that file, but it is now available at that URL.
Sorry for any problems.

Will this work for a BCM43224 as well? Or should I download the specific driver for that chip from the Broadcom site (5.100.82.112) and edit your script? I have wireless working on that system with your original script, but it’s operating as 802.11g instead of dual band n.

Thanks for all the great help you provide!

Thank you very much!

That link will work for any Broadcom device using b43; however, the 5G band has
never worked with b43. I have no idea if Broadcom wl works better with your
device. As a kernel developer, I can never taint my kernel.

You seem to be confused about the difference between driver and firmware.

I would say that “confused” is an understatement at this point. Fortunately, I have a spare PC for experimentation - the lack is time rather than desire.

Firmware is the software that runs on the microprocessor CPU in the wireless
chip. The driver is software that runs on the host CPU.

I have fresh installed OpenSUSE 12.3 and I am not able to wifi connect (Earlier I had OpenSUSE 12.1 and wifi was working).
I have been reading the excellent article from Larry, but still haven’t been able to solve the problem. These are some of the messages I get from my machine:

As shown in http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#Supported_devices,
the 14e4:432b device is supported by wl, but not for b43 or brcmsmac. You will
need that driver, which should be available for your kernel through Packman.

Thank you for your answer-

I have installed package:
broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop - Wireless driver for Broadcom 43xx series of chips

and now Wifi is back!

Thank you again!
