Booting from USB drive fails on Macbook

Hello everyone,

I followed these instructions and created a bootable USB disk. When booting from it on my Macbook, nothing happens, the screen turns black. What should I do? I tried it multiple times with a NET and a full DVD image.

Thanks for your help.

Hi and welcome to the Forum
What model MacBook? If you press the e key at grub and at the linuxefi at the end of the line (after quiet) add nomodeset and press F10 to continue to boot and see if that helps.

Hi Malcolm,

thanks for your reply. It’s a 2015 MacBook Pro with an Intel Core i5 CPU and an Intel Iris Graphics 6100 adapter.

I don’t even reach GRUB. First comes the Mac-internal bootloader and I select the USB drive to boot from. Then the screen turns black.

I went through the same process with an Ubuntu image and it works (after the Mac bootloader comes GRUB), so the problem seems to be SUSE-specific.

Any more ideas?

Update: It works with Tumbleweed! Where’s the difference with Leap?

Did you ever find out why Leap did not work? Thinking about installing in a 2016 Macbook as well.
