Bluetooth wont discover a device

openSuse 13.1
KDE 4.11.5

After reading some other bluetooth (bt) threads and running a few command line operations, it seems like bt is recognized, turned on and running.
However when I ask it to add a device, it scans forever and finds nothing. In addition, I cannot see it from my IPad.

PC is a Toshiba laptop Inspiron 3515 I think with the built in bluetooth and wifi.
Though it is connected to the internet via wired.

What next to try ?

And thanks

Hello.

13.1 had some problem with BT. Also some had to activate the BT-circuit by first boot into Windows and reboot openSUSE.
As root, have you tried

linux-a0vz:~ # bluetoothctl
[NEW] Controller 24:0A:64:EC:AA:9D linux-a0vz.site [default]
[NEW] Device 00:11:67:FD:8D:E9 Bluetooth Optic Mouse
[bluetooth]# scan on
Discovery started
[CHG] Controller 24:0A:64:EC:AA:9D Discovering: yes
[bluetooth]#

So try to boot windows and if no good try adding in a terminal.
An example where a headset is connected, first scan, pair, trust and then connect:

[bluetooth]# **scan on **
Discovery started
[CHG] Controller 24:0A:64:EC:AA:9D Discovering: yes

Hello Quiness.
I do not have windows installed and this what I get.

Sunhui-PC:~ # bluetoothctl
[NEW] Controller F8:2F:A8:DF:40:1E Sunhui-PC.site [default]
[bluetooth]# scan on
Discovery started
[CHG] Controller F8:2F:A8:DF:40:1E Discovering: yes
[bluetooth]#

I know that there are devices to discover as my IPad can see them.

Sorry, tried to find some more information. Hopefully some one else can help you. If I find some good stuff, it will be posted here.

Thanks again Quiness. I think this is related to the problem that I am having with the wireless as I have posted. Maybe one will solve the other.

I note that your BT device was identified in your wireless thread as

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0a5c:21d7 Broadcom Corp. BCM43142 Bluetooth 4.0

This chipset does require firmware, so this is likely to be your issue. I don’t own this hardware, so can only offer you the information I’ve found onine.

FWIW, I dug up an old thread where the same hardware was discussed (but not necessarily resolved):

https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/478025-Opensuse-12-2-does-not-detect-wireless-card-and-bluetooth?p=2484816#post2484816

Post #4 of this archlinux thread links to this Ubuntu thread which might offer some insight in to getting the required firmware loaded.

This too:

https://build.merproject.org/package/show/nemo:devel:hw:nv:tegra3:nexus7/nexus7-fw-installer

If I were to purchase an external Bluetooth device, do you think that it would have the same problem ?
They are very cheap.

I see this one yet it says for 12.x rather than 13.1

What say y’all ?

Well, it claims Linux support, and a quick search online shows that others using Linux have mentioned it, so may be worth a shot. Chipset details are also useful.
