Authentication required for USB

Opensuse 13.2, XFCE

After my last update, root authentication is required to mount USB devices.

Does anyone have an idea why this might be happening?

Any and all help appreciated.

I don’t remember.

When the update notification came up, I just updated.

Have you tried rebooting?

Some authentication depends on polkit. And polkit authentication depends on systemd.

Some updates restart systemd and break communication between polkit and systemd. Rebooting fixes that.

I’m not sure if that is your issue, but it is worth trying.

I thought I had rebooted in the last day or two. It’s been 5 and the update occurred in that period. When I Restarted from the XFCE menu, I was asked to authenticate. After the reboot, I hit Restart again and was not asked to authenticate. After the reboot I stuck a USB key in, and it mounted just fine. So, it looks like the problem in not occurring anymore.

Thanks for the help

ok, next time run “zypper ps” and it will tell you if there are programs
or services that need restarting to really apply the update. So to say.
