Audacity crashes desktop

Recently upgraded 15.4 to 15.5. Using 15.4 I was running Audacity 2.2.2 to record from the radio. In 15.4 I had packman enabled with switched system package. It wasn’t perfect but it was workable.

When I installed 15.5 I had packman repo disabled and I manually changed each conflict to the 15.5 system file. Now Audacity runs for about 30 sec and then crashes, dropping me back to the login screen (as if I had logged out of my X session). I’m running on KDE & Plasma.

Due to this crash, running from the terminal does not save any info. I did save some output from /var/log/messages but that output includes a lot of extraneous entries to sort thru. Even tho audacity has a log file, it is only for the session and I have not been able to find the logfile anywhere on my system.

I have since used snapshot to rolled back to 15.4.

This is the output in terminal from the startup before a crash. Those entries are the same in 15.4 & 15.5 when starting Audacity.

Thank you for this detailed info. I’ll go through it carefully comparing it to mine.

Possible places to check:

  • The repository URL.
  • Pulse-Audio – Alsa – Jack – Pipewire …
  • ‘~/.audacity-data/’

For the case of the latter, I notice that, I have some rather old – dated 2016 – configuration files in the Audacity data directory – «I need to clean it up … »

@6520302:

Ooops! – And now, I have an Audacity crash …

  • I installed the “pipewire-jack” package which, removed the “libjack0” package and, moved Pipewire packages from the Main openSUSE repository to the Multimedia:Libs repository plus, the additional installation of some libraries from the OSS repository …

The crash looks like this:

 > audacity
ALSA lib pcm_dsnoop.c:566:(snd_pcm_dsnoop_open) unable to open slave
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:999:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

Thanks for this. I don’t have debug selected and I see the log file is part of that directory although yours shows 0 bytes.

The files I have in .audacity-data & tmp are quite old, I was thinking about deleting them (plus directories) and hoping new ones would be created. Also am unaware of pipewire. I haven’t had a chance to check my system yet.

I have checked the repo URL’s but I should check again.

I have the same applicable info as in your post.
One difference, below (double ** in two lines) . I’m still looking for the applicable config file.
All else is the same.

I have more to check but I’ve been short on spare time.
Thanks

@6520302:

A note of what I had to remove and re-install to get Audacity running again:

I’m glad you have yours working. My system does not have any of the removed files selected and all of the installed files you list are already installed.

I do have an older computer that I have updated to 15.5 and audacity does work in the computer so I’m at a loss why it not only does not work on my Thinkpad but it crashes the desktop when it runs, logging me out and presenting me with the login screen.

I’m currently testing ocenaudio on that computer to see if it works. I am considering removing audacity and deleting the config files and reinstalling it just to see if it behaves better. The only thing different between a working audacity on 15.4 and a broken one on 15.5 is that on 15.4 I had packman repo enabled in 15.4 w/ switch system packages. On 15.5 I have not enabled packman.

Of course you should do this.

Also try to create a new user who will start audacity.

Audacity is crash-prone. When working on a big project, it usually crashes, often when beginning playing from the pointer’s position, or when changing the pointer’s position, or when making a selection.

Audacity used to crash even before some changes in ownership of the project or users’ default privacy settings were made.

Thanks for the new user suggestion. It seems to be a common suggestion and I have not done that. I used Audacity w/ Packman files to record a one hr program from the radio while using fully updated 15.4. Saved the mp3 and then upgraded to 15.5, reverting to system files for the upgrade. Audacity crashes within 30 sec of operation. It’s difficult for me to see how a new user would make a difference but I will give it a shot.

I now have Audacity running on an older ‘backup’ computer running 15.5. No issues with that. When I get enough free time I plan on doing a file by file comparison between the two. Since the hardware is different I’m not certain that the comparison will be valid.

Comparing file by file is very laborious. You will only scratch the surface.

KDE system monitor (look for RAM usage there) can be used to check memory leaks.

There is a chance that hardware is damaged. Suspects are the disk, motherboard’s disk controller, RAM. Some tools for checking this are the dmesg command, files in /var/log/, smartctl -a command, badblocks command, computer check tools built in pre-boot environment (BIOS), memtest utility.

You might have encountered a case of bit rot or bit flip. This can happen if the hardware is too old or if there was power outage.

As far as I know, in Linux there is no equivalent of Windows’s sfc command.

Thanks for those suggestions. Some of them I’ve done but not all.

The hardware is about 15 yrs old so it is getting old. However, another computer it runs on is even older but has different hardware. Also Ocenaudio works fine and does everything I need but I prefer the interface of Audacity because it is more familiar to me.
