ATI Drivers RV280 Radeon 9200 Pro Black Screen

Hi everyone, I have been trying without any success to install the ATI drivers on my openSUSE 11.1 box.
My VGA compatible controller is ATI Technologies Inc RV280 Radeon 9200 Pro Rev 01.
What I have done so far is as follows:

I have installed the latest drivers via the 1-click-install here:

http://opensuse-community.org/ati.ymp

Then, as instructed on ATI Driver How-To Wiki

ATI - openSUSE

I ran the following code:

su -c 'SaX2 -r -m 0=fglrx'

Which then loads the SaX2: X11 Configuration window. But when I press the OK button, it asks to Test the configuration and error pops up. And it refers me to the /var/log/Xorg.99.log which has the following output:

My glxinfo********** output prior to installation shows

OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R200 20060602 AGP 4x x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 7.2
OpenGL extensions:

But when I restart X by any means (log-off-log-in or reboot or CTRL+ALTBCKSPx2) I end up with a command line login. After logging in I try to run sax2 and end up with a dreaded black screen. No way back from that one except reboot.
If I try to run glxinfo to see if ATI drivers are installed I get the following:

Error: Unable to open display (null)

Then as I tried troubleshooting it, wiki suggests running this:

   # ldconfig
   # aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf

But output is:

aticonfig: No supported adapters detected

Can someone please help me out? What am I missing here?

Any help is greatly appreciated.**

Forget fglrx with that device, it is not supported by fglrx.

The error message is crystal clear:

aticonfig: No supported adapters detected

Use the free “radeon” driver.

oh. ok.
Could you point me in the right direction for the free ‘radeon’ driver.
Thanks.

Remove that fglrx-crap completely and start sax2.

So I should go back to:

OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R200 20060602 AGP 4x x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 7.2
OpenGL extensions:

No compiz for my hardware then…?

No, you should go back to radeon (which supports 3D and compiz), however with such an old card you will certainly not get great performance.

Yeah, I know I won’t get top results with this card. But I think it can do better than what it is doing right now. I mean, If I run a low quality youtube video on full screen it is incredibly choppy. Not even viewable.
I went back to ATI Radeon Desktop Graphics webpage for the driver and found that my card has the following:

Xfree86 4.3 Drivers

and

X.Org 6.8 Drivers

There is also an automated installer there which I plan to use right now… (unless of course am really off track).

This is the download page I am looking at right now.

ATI Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver 8.28.8

Forget fglrx, forget it completely, that package will not work.

Reason:

Automated installer and Display Drivers for XFree86 4.3 and X.Org 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1

Darn… I think am a lil confused then. I thought the drivers supplied at link above where indeed the ones you were referring to as free ‘radeon’ drivers.

Did you ever solve this issue with your PC? I, unfortunately, did the same thing.

Can someone please lend me a hand? I am a linux-noob but decided to finally use openSUSE at home instead of Windows.

All I can boot to now is Failsafe and that sticks me at the command prompt. Is there a way I can uninstall the ATI driver from here? Or remove the ‘fglrx crap’? Im a little lost at this point, how can I remove that stuff from the command prompt?

Thanks

Got it! I managed to find the uninstall in the /etc/share/ati directory.

Now I have to find out how to install the radeon free driver…
