Atheros ath9k driver: wireless won't connect, says WLAN unavailable

Hi… I have been searching through everything I could find on this problem, and have tried a bunch of different things, all with no success. Hopefully someone can help me.

I have the 64 bit version of SUSE 12.1. I have tried several different things, whatever I could find: mad wifi installaion, tried configuring under network manager as well as through the YAST network settings… even got desperate and tried the NDIS wrapper. Nothing has worked yet.

I have an Atheros 9285 PCI card on my laptop… it uses the ath9k driver. No matter what I do, it continually says “WLAN Interface unavailable” or that my wireless is not connected. I honestly don’t know what else to do. I have tried using rfkill and unblock commands… also tried using modprobe to find the driver and make sure it is active… which it says it is, according to the YAST hardware information screen.

Using iwlist scan it says on wlan0 that my network is down…

I ran rfkill list and this is what it looks like:

linux-lx70:/home/amy # /usr/sbin/rfkill list
0: sony-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
2: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
3: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

I don’t understand why it says acer because I have a sony laptop… but I did see that it says this is soft blocked… not sure what that means.

It does have my network configured properly under the network manager settings, from what I can tell (it shows the name, BSSID and MAC address, shows the little wireless graphic with the beams radiating out from it) but it shows as unavailable and not connected. One thing strange I noticed is that when, under YAST, I have it under traditional ifup, my wireless LED lights up. But the wireless still doesn’t work… just saying it makes my light go on. Then when I switch back to the network manager the light goes off.

Hopefully I’ve given you the info you need, anything else just let me know, I tried to remember everything i’ve done (lol) to make it work.

On a side note… my husband is able to run the wireless on his just fine… he has the same wireless card, but his driver shows a little asterisk after it. His says ath9k* and mine just shows ath9k. I don’t know if it means anything or not but I did find it strange that his had the star and worked.

Thank you very much for any help.

Amy

This is a problem that affect a lot of people. You need to blacklist the
acer-wmi module. It should not load for anything but Acer laptops, but it does
affect Thinkpads and some other brands. Until now, I was not aware that Sony
laptops were also affected.

You need to blacklist module acer-wmi. Open a terminal, and enter the command
‘kdesu kwrite /etc/modules.d/50-blacklist.conf’. At the end of the file, add the
line “blacklist acer-wmi”, save the file, and reboot.

Enjoy.
