Atheros AR9485 on HP ProBook 6570b not detected

Hi all

I have a new HP ProBook 6570b with the mentioned WLAN card. Alas, the card does not seem to be detected at all with openSuse 12.2. I have Win 7 on a second partition, and WLAN works well there.

I am pretty clueless on how to proceed. Please find below the output of lspci, ifconfig and iwconfig. As you can see, the WLAN adapter does not seem to be detected.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jürgen

Please post:

/sbin/lspci -nnk | grep -i -A2 net

and

lsusb

I can´t see any Atheros Chip.

This system has a Broadcom card as shown by this line fron lspci:

24:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43228 802.11a/b/g/n

As the OP failed to include the essential switch “-nn”, I do not know what
driver it takes, but the b43 wiki at
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 says that the BCM43228 needs wl.

Many thanks, people. Obviously I was mislead by the information given here:
https://www.suse.com/nbswebapp/yesBulletin.jsp?bulletinNumber=137683

Anyways, here is the missing information:

lspci -nnk

Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company BCM943228HM4L 802.11a/b/g/n 2x2 Wi-Fi Adapter [103c:182c]

Note that no kernel driver is mentioned for this particular item!

How can I load the needed driver (wl or whichever)?

Thanks again,
Jürgen

For the sake of completeness:

lspci -nnk | grep -i -A2 net

00:19.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation 82579V Gigabit Network Connection [8086:1503] (rev 04)

Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company BCM943228HM4L 802.11a/b/g/n 2x2 Wi-Fi Adapter [103c:182c]

Sigh It was just a matter of installing the proprietary broadcom-wl driver.

Thanks for putting me on the right track!

That information is likely correct; however, did you actually buy the model with
openSUSE loaded? Obviously not. The Linux-based system must use a wireless card
with a suitable, open-source driver. The Winblows version does not, and wl for
Window$ is as open as any other driver for that closed OS.

These kinds of situations are why we never accept make and model information.
Instead, we demand PCI or USB IDs.

The machine was purchased by my employer (University). They only provide and support Win and Mac machines, but at least they let me install and maintain Linux on my own.
