Asus ZenBook S14 UX5406 questions

Hello

I just ordered new laptop to replace my 3 year old Dell XPS and I have been searching alot for Linux distro that has support for it? How is openSUSE?

Laptop specs are

-intel core ultra 9 288V
-intel arc2 integrated graphics
-32GB RAM
-3k OLED 120Hz screen
-1TB NVMe
-NPU at 47 TOPS

I have seen Ubuntu have some experimental drivers as snaps for that system already with include intel-npu-beta drivers

Fedora has decent support for basic stuff no NPU what I have found, sound, screen, wifi etc issues still present

Mostly I am still interested on atomic side as main machine. Still will be my development, work, editing and graphics machine

@PhatLe I’m running discrete ARC DG2 gpu’s here (a 310 and a 380), some fun getting both to work, so only have the 380 in at present, aside from that, oneapi works, opencl 3 etc, handbrake uses qsv, ffmpeg work… Looking forward to the Mesa 24.2 update and see where the Xe driver is at.

I suspect there will be issues with the npu…

Intel has released beta NPU drivers for Linux already that I have found out and blender, gimp, inkscape etc are pushing NPU support for tasks too so I am really excited for this one

I might get openSUSE for spin Aeon might be good option too

Oh and I have read lots of supported drivers and stuff is on 6.12 kernels coming

@PhatLe oneAPI and the intel level zero and raytracing https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:malcolmlewis:TESTING/intel-level-zero-gpu-raytracing driver work on Blender in my tests…

Since GTK4 defaults to vulkan, make sure that libvulkan_intel is installed.

Thank you this seems to be my distro for ZenBook just need to wait some days for laptop arrive

ASUS are known for heavily customizing their laptops, especially the leading edge ones, so don’t be surprised if “advanced features” like the special touchpad features don’t work out of the box or if you cannot get decent sound from those 4 HK speakers (just as an example).

Yeah I had similar issues on first year with Dell XPS 15 9510 it takes some time before drivers and support comes to Linux fully
Touchpad features I am ok if touchpad works at first special features later is bonus, sounds I use at home 2.1 speakers and on the road and office pixel buds pro 2 so that’s all good for now too and bonus if works later

And Mesa 24.3+ for iGPU (Intel Battlemage), it will come in weeks.
