ASUS X750LA laptop touchpad does not work

Searching the Internet will find reports of this problem going back to at least 2014. There are plenty of abandoned bug reports. No one has solved it.

The touchpad in the ASUS X750LA firmware 211 laptop (and other models) is not recognized.

Strangely, the touchpad in the very similar ASUS X750JA firmware 208 does work, in as simple an environment as booted from the LEAP 15 installer.

The 208 firmware for the working JA model provides a clue with “To support FocalTech Touch Pad” as its purpose.

How many serpents and dragons are in the way of getting the touchpad to work on the LA model?

How many serpents and dragons are in the way of getting the touchpad to work on the LA model?

A question for the vendor. Without their active interest/support with progressing such issues, not a lot can be done.

FWIW, there’s some good diagnostic advice in these bug reports…
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1314198
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1110011
Two boot parameters that are mentioned as helping with gaining some touchpad functionality are ‘i8042.nomux’ and ‘psmouse.proto=bare’. Unfortunately, the latter parameter causes the touchpad to be treated as a basic PS/2 pointing device (so would only function in a basic manner if it works at all).

These parameters do nothing for this laptop.

Frustrating that the touchpad works fine in the Windows 10 installer environment but is dead to Linux, even fully installed.

I can imagine (and reason enough for me to avoid this particular brand).

Sometimes, one can gleam useful clues via the boot messages related to input devices eg

dmesg|egrep "i8042|input"

In the end a bug report would likely need to be submitted (or added to).

For anyone following this thread, my solution was to replace the LA version motherboard with a JA model. Now the trackpad works without issue.

That’s a pragmatic solution. Thanks for the update.
