Is anyone else here a Geocacher? I’m kgroneman (funny thing that) on
http://www.geocaching.com
Hi Kim
I think “69 rs ss”, is as he was asking about what software people use
in ‘looking for’.
I have a Garmin Nuvi to find my way around Ponunk with street maps and
topo maps. Have also had fun recording track data and poking it into
google maps Now if I could just get the Blackberry to tether I could
send the data back home.

Unfortunately, there are only a few higher priced units that do both
geocaching mode and are good for road trip info.

I’ve tried using my Garmin GPS with my Blackberry for this purpose, but
Google Maps Mobile on the BB doesn’t give you the ability to enter
coordinates directly (afaik) and doesn’t seem to have the precision
necessary to locate things. Standing at a local park where there’s a
cache, GM showed us about 50 feet away (at best) from where we were
actually standing.

This is really cool!
I don’t have a GPS device, but it’s a cool idea.
Pretty interesting that there’s one in my town.
I like the idea of this.
Has orienteering completely died?
LOL! A compass is so 20th century. At least if we get hit by an EM pulse, I’ll be able to magnetize a needle and float it in some water and get by. Not that it will show me where a cache is however…
There’s supposed to be a cache in my town, right along our greenway (paved walking/biking paths). Been tempted to look for it but I don’t have a GPS so I’d just be walking around based on where they described it and hope to stumble upon it ;).
I’ve heard mention about people using it as a team-building exercise. Do you see that as being effective (or would it be better to have 2 teams with paint-balls trying to “capture” the cache?! )!?!
I dunno about team building. I do do it with my family and we all have fun doing it so I suppose it is. I just think it’s a lot of fun…kind of like treasure hunting and, like here in these forums, you can get to know a lot of people with geocaching activity in common. It’s also just a great excuse to get outdoors and do something fun. Whever I take a trip anywhere, I like to search for geocaches in the area.
