AMD GPU with MESA driver show artifacts in Youtube videos

Hi,
after having used 2 different versions of Fedora (Fedora KDE and Kinoite) in the last 4 years or so, I have now installed Tumbleweed again which I used before those 4 years. There is some getting used to it since Fedora, especially Kinoite, does things a bit different. But that will be okay.

I write since I have the same issue which I had in Kinoite: when playing Youtube video’s I get artifacts in the picture, meaning I see vertical lines which not only divide the picture but also have different shades of colors on either side. On the Fedora forum are a couple of threads about this and the general idea is MESA version number. I use the flatpak version of Brave and in there I see MESA version 26.1.6. Version 26.1.8 should apparently have cured the issue for several people, although others still claim this is not the case. I can’t remember the website but I have seen versions 26.2.x already.

Because flatpaks can’t use system installed drivers, the 26.1.6 must be installed in the flatpak. I asked at Flathub but they don’t package Brave and at Brave they also told me they don’t do it. Still I installed Brave from Flathub as a flatpak.
Who else can do the packaging?

The artifacts I am talking about look like this:

Especially at the bottom you see the darker park with a vertical line on both sides.
Sometimes it is the full height of the video, then only small parts of it.

I have not installed the Nvidia driver (like in Fedora) and hope I don’t have to do that here as well. Laptop is much quieter without it.

Questions:
Are there any openSUSE users who see the same kind of artifacts?
Who can explain, and please in simple terms, what (which software) can cause this and who takes care of this? I was told it is MESA but I just have to believe that since I have no clue about software internals.

Thank you for your help.

Thank you @hui
I have read the page you linked to and also followed a link in that page but I have no idea what I am reading. I think this issue is not fixed yet, right? Who should fix it? I read it’s a kernel regression, but also MESA 26.1.6 is faulty. What to do now? Simply wait?

  1. Possibly. You should boot to a previous snapshot and see if issue exists there.
  2. Incorrect (works here, zero issues)

All YouTube video work here in Brave (Flatpak) 1.95.101, Chromium: 153.0.8010.37, with MESA 26.1.6

From ‘brave://gpu/’ output:

(GPU0: VENDOR= 0x8086 [Google Inc. (Intel)],
DEVICE=0x3ea0 [ANGLE (Intel, Mesa Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 (WHL GT2),
OpenGL 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 26.1.6 (git-ffa422e53d))],
DRIVER_VENDOR=Mesa, DRIVER_VERSION=26.1.6 *ACTIVE* )

This is since the Brave flatpak uses the Mesa runtime from flathub. Which does not have the openSUSE limitation(s).

You could install kernel-longterm meanwhile and see how that works.

No, on Intel CPU/GPU it works, it is only with AMD system that problems occur.

Thank you all for your replies. The subject can be closed now since I have moved back to Fedora Kinoite, not the F44 release but the beta of F45 with a newer kernel (7.2.5-300), a newer MESA (26.2.2) and probably more new stuff. I have now zero problems with it, it all runs great.
Another reason why I wanted to return to Kinoite is that it is faster than Tumbleweed. Faster in the sense that it opens programs just a bit faster, booting is faster and I like the way Kinoite is setup: a base OS with a DE (KDE) and flatpaks. That’s all I need. I did use Tumbleweed with the same flatpaks, kept my home folder during installation and flatpaks are installed with the --user option in the home folder.

Again, thanks for the answers with the tips. Maybe till later.
