Activities dead

Hi!

I’m new to OpenSUSE and this is my first post here. I’ve been using LEAP on two laptops for about few weeks now. I installed LEAP 42.1 on both of them, using the same image and network installation.

After last update I lost all activities saved on one of the computers. And I’m unable to open activities manager. If I click on those three dots nothing happens. With the last update my widgets in the panel also disappeared. I was able to fix that, but activities are gone. I can’t make new and those I had before I can’t switch to.

I tried setting everything to defaults through Configure Desktop option, but nothing changed. I see now that version of the system is not anymore 42.1 but 42.2alpha instead. Why did it update to alpha automatically? Is that gonna happen on my other computer as well?

To begin with, Leap 42.2 is in the Alpha stage, it will go through Beta, etc. until finely released. as Leap 42.2. But it is still in** testing**. Thus when you install Leap 42.2, you are involved in the testing and should not be amazed by it going forward and then having new features, bugs addressed, or even introducing new bugs.

As you say you started installing Lepa 42.1, you probably added Leap 42.2 repos (and zypper dup’ed to it), else I do not see why you now have 42.2.

Second, you are apperently talking about things happening in a desktop environment, but you forgot to tell which one. From your description, it can be guessed that it is KDE, but it is much better to start your description indentifying what you use. Much easier for everybody to understand what you probably do and see.

Probably he did not zypper dup to it, but only updated the system with the standard updater.
This actually may have caused the problems, the updater is not designed to do a distribution upgrade.
So the system is a mix between 42.1 and 42.2 Alpha now I suppose.

@Wlaz: to fix it, you need to run “zypper dup”.
You basically have two options:

  • fully upgrade to 42.2 Alpha
  • switch back to 42.1

Please tell us which one you’d prefer, and post a list of your repos for further help:

zypper lr -d

And to answer your question:
No, this doesn’t happen automatically. You must have added the 42.2 repo manually somehow.

zypper lr -d

I would like to go back to the stable system, 42.1. I’m using KDE Plasma.

remove all 42.2 repos and do zypper dup should bring you back

You have to add repos it does not happen automatically

You probably used some 1-click installer for 42.2 to get this, and this in turn likely added the standard 42.2 repos too.

gogalthorp already told you how to fix your system.
In the future make sure you only use 1-click installs that are actually intended for the openSUSE version you have installed (normally they should be available for all supported versions anyway).
In this case, use http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/pontostroy:/X11/openSUSE_Leap_42.1/ instead.

Thanks for help.
