A Copy & paste tip for those that don't know.

Ever seen something you want to C&P something you see in a browser & didn’t want to open say Kwrite or Libre Office? Well it turns out you can do this:

  1. select what you want to copy rclick copy to Klipboard
2)Open dolphin to your /home rclick & select then click paste clipboard contents
  2. a dialog box will show up asking you to name it give it a name click OK
** Note: this only works with text.**

You can also drag and drop the selected content with the same result.

Correct
It’s not unique to KDE though

I copy paste into sticky notes / tomboy notes which i “set” to start with the desktop. I click on tray icon and copy paste into a new note

Thanks Chief! I didn’t know but now I do, that’s even easier I’ll take that to where I got the original.

Not quite the same but I did have kwrite on the panel.

Yeah,not quite,

  • you cannot search through all the text files.
  • You cannot link documents.
  • You cannot list documents vertically
  • It is capable of syncing ,but i don’t use sync.

Kwrite on panel is as good as it sitting in the main menu.

You talk about Klipper and that makes me assume that you use KDE. But this is not obvious to the innocent reader.

  1. select what you want to copy
is in the Klipboard without any further action. (And it is of course also "under the middle mouse button)

I assume that at 2, you mean your home directory and not your /home directory.

ctrl+c and ctrl+v works perfectly fine, too.
There is one more cool function in klipper:
You can modify the klipper content and create a QR code. That one, you can also drag&drop into Dolphin or elsewhere:
http://1.1.1.2/bmi/www.susepaste.org/images/52206822.png
tested in:
3.4.33-2.24-desktop x86_64
openSUSE 12.2
KDE 4.8.5
klipper v0.9.7

Whoops! Where is my link to the image on susepaste.org?
Is it an offense to post a QR code or did I mess it up somehow?

And in a terminal window: Ctrl-Shift-C to copy, Ctrl-Shift-V to paste.

Hi I’m getting “Paste clipboard contents” with everything i copy and its driving me crazy how do I disable it ?? KDE 4.11 Opensuse 12.3 64Bit

my best is “ctrl alt v” to show the klipper contents and select by arrow, enter and ctrl v to paste… i use it tons times a day…

What I like most about copy & paste in Xwindows is that I don’t have to select “Copy” or “Paste” at all!
Just select a text in one application and press the middle mouse button in another application to paste it there.

If I have to use Windows, I always try to do it that way as well out of habit. It always takes me some time getting used to right-click/choose “Copy”/then right-click/choose “Paste” (or press the corresponding keyboard shortcuts) again…

Oh, and in KDE4 middle-clicking on the desktop automatically creates a new notes plasmoid on the desktop with the current X selection’s text. I really like that!

greaaat!!!, this I didn’t know…

I was unaware of this KDE 4 feature either. Seems very handy indeed.

Thank You for using openSUSE,

This, really is a timesaver rotfl!

openSUSE 12.3
KDE 4.10.5

I can’t seem to get this to work. I added klipper to my panel yet when I do a copy, then click on the clipboard icon, nothing happens.
What am I doing wrong ?

thanks

How did you add it and where? Could you post a screenshot? Klipper should be running by default on a fresh install, maybe you just added a launcher for Klipper to the panel?
Look for a scissors symbol in the system tray (the part just left of the digital clock).

Can you click on other icons?

Does pressing Ctrl+Alt+V open Klipper’s popup?

  1. I added it by 1st searching for it in the launcher, rt-click, and Add-to-Panel
  2. I don’t have the scissors, I have a clipboard. I used to have a scissors and was looking for it but all I saw were discussions about it being changed.
  3. CTL-Alt-V does nothing.
  4. Other icons work fine.

OK, as I thought. You added a launcher for Klipper to the panel, that’s the clipboard icon you have.
Click on that to run Klipper, when Klipper is running it should show that scissors symbol in the system tray.

You can remove that clipboard again, you won’t need it. Klipper should start automatically on login.
If it doesn’t do that, right-click on the scissors and select “Quit”. It should then ask if it should be started automatically on login.
