64 bit for a java developer

I’ve been using opensuse 11.2 64 bit for a few month on lenovo T61 with 4GB ram, I’m a java developer and my main tools are Intellij idea, eclipse ,maven ,ant, firefox and chromium, tomcat and jetty.
I noticed high memory consumption especially by Intellij ,firefox and chrome, chrome would sometime consume half the machine memory with 10-15 open tabs, in many cases I just had to shut it down in order to continue working. maven also requires me to increase its default memory or it crashes on out of memory errors. Intellij wouldn’t work well with less then 1GB memory.
now, I’m really not sure if that has to do with that the os is 64b,
what do you guys think?
I now installed 11.3 32 bit and will work with it for sometime to see if there’s a difference.

As this is Java-specific I would recommend two things. First, check the
Java forums as, if this is an issue, you are almost certainly not the
first to see it. The forums specific to your listed products may also
have some data.

Second, as a Java person you probably understand well the ability to have
multiple JREs on the system. I’d extract a 32-bit JRE somewhere and run
your tools (the Java-based ones anyway) with them and compare with similar
workloads to see if the same thing happens. Even with an OS that is
x86_64 this should be possible (backwards-compatible) and should give you
a good idea. Worst-case scenario, put things back as they are now. If
you do not need the 64-bit code for development you may be better-off
using a 32-bit JRE for those purposes.

Good luck.
