i just installed opensuse 12.1 on a mac pro which the sound its no working , is there any way to make work ? thanks

here is the link with my sound info http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=92a339f8bfc5bf96f86759abe1b97c6b8e05b2dd

You seem to have 2 sound hardware devices
Which are you trying to use?

In addition to answering caf4926’s questions, note that you have your audio switched OFF in your mixer. From that script output that you posted, look at this:

**Card hw:0 'Intel'/'HDA Intel at 0x90520000 irq 67'**
  Mixer name	: 'Realtek ALC889A'
**Simple mixer control 'Master',0**
  Limits: Playback 0 - 64
  Mono: Playback 64 [100%] [0.00dB] **[off]**
**Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0**
  Front Left: Playback 64 [100%] [0.00dB] **[off]**
  Front Right: Playback 64 [100%] [0.00dB] **[off]**
**Simple mixer control 'Speaker',0**
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 64 [100%] [0.00dB] **[off]**
  Front Right: Playback 64 [100%] [0.00dB] **[off]**
**Simple mixer control 'PCM',0**
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Front Left: Playback 64 [100%] [0.00dB] **[off]**
  Front Right: Playback 64 [100%] [0.00dB] **[off]**
**Simple mixer control 'Auto-Mute Mode',0**
Items: 'Disabled' 'Speaker Only' 'Line-Out Speaker'
  Item0: 'Line-Out Speaker'

As you can see, while you have the PC volume levels turned UP to 100%, in all cases : master, headphone, speaker PCM, your PC has OFF (ie MUTE) selected absolutely guaranteeing that you will hear no sound.

Sorry - I lost touch there with my inner newb.

You need now to umute those in your mixer or in your pulse audio volume control. I like to install the application pulse audio volume control (pavucontrol) and run that the 1st time I run any multimedia application to tune pulse audio for that application. I wrote a blog about this: Pulseaudio Basics for openSUSE with pavucontrol - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

hi thanks for helping me , i am new to linux and any of those working with sound would be ok , thanks

how can i turn it on ? thanks

Are you using kde or gnome?

└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── does it help with anything ?

First check in Yast > Hardware > Sound that the volume slider is on about 80%+

Also check which device is set as Primary

You can test the sound here too

Also check in System Settings > Multimedia > Phonon > Device Preferences… Lots to check here that it matches your chosen device

i dont have this option (phonon) on multimedia , is there anything on yaST that i can install to make it work ? thanks

Let me show you the route to where I mean with a little video clip
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/route_to_phonon_settings.mkv

yes the sound is set 80% and i have 3 divices to chose on phonon and none of them work , there list as ( default hw0,0 hw0,1 ) thanks

Which device is set as default in Yast > Hardware > Sound?
I think the alsa script you posted earlier had the intel device as 0

I would work with that for now and once you have it seemingly all set for the Intel device in all areas. Then reboot and test again.

Did you try pavucontrol per my above post ? (I’ll quote it for you):
