  1. was it like this (BROKE) on your FIRST boot after initial install
    of 11.1 with gnome?

a. if yes, then:

please open a terminal, put in
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and post the results back to this group…

b. if no, then answer these:

  1. if you use YaST to add a new user and then log into Gnome as that
new user, does it work ok then?

  2. if you boot from a Live CD (11.1 & gnome), does it run ok then?

if the answer to either 2 or 3 is yes, then answer this:

  1. what changes were made to your system on the last day it worked
    correctly?

i’m not sure, but i think if you install the Nvidia driver it might
fix your problems…

see: http://en.opensuse.org/Nvidia
for the map to get that done…you will need to figure out which way
you need to go (with all the click drag whatever problems you have)…

by the way, i have NEVER read a problem like yours…

AH…i just thought of something: did you md5sum check your media
prior to installing?? see: http://tinyurl.com/6jwtg9

i installed the nvidia driver but it didnt seem to help this problem … now i can only boot with failsafe … but i can watch youtube and it works fine with the failsafe setting .

is there any disadvantages to booting failsafe?

when i try to boot normally the screen gets really distorted and it just crashes.

and the md5sum thing i have no clue about… i dont think i did it

ok…see, you said that you had the SAME problem when running the Live
CD…a very strange problem…so i think you INSTALLED that problem
from a defective CD…

read here,

http://tinyurl.com/6jwtg9

there should be plenty of info on HOW to check the md5sum of the
downloaded iso, and how to and make SURE you have a 100% perfect
install disk…if not, do not install…

if you find that your install CD was in fact ok…then come back and
post again…
