10 step multimedia check ---(sporadic youtube functionality)

Here are the results from the 10-step multimedia check sticky. I am currently experiencing sporadic problems with youtube videos. Either the video is blank, or the sound is off or choppy or sped up. This usually happens after 10 or so successful videos I’ve watched. A reboot fixes the problem, but is not a solution.

Thanks,

Steph

libschroeder (or something similar) was uninstalled as a conflict resolution for liboil. Apparently libschroeder needed an older version of liboil, so I made the (likely incorrect) executive decision to uninstall libschroeder.

(this was caught during the ‘update with newer version’ process for the packman repository)

I’m continuing on with the process mentioned. I will try to log these dependency conflicts in the future (or are they already logged somewhere?).

Steph

Okay, well “the process” said to go through and resolve other dependences, so in doing so, the libschroeder thing popped up again. So now I got to make the other choice, to install the older version of liboil, as well as save the dependency conflicts to a file.

continuing on,

Steph

Started selecting applications to install (from “the list” from “the process”) and YAST locks up when “smplayer” is selected. It forever looks like it is “checking dependencies”. Changing focus to this Firefox browser to write this message, does not allow me to regain focus of YAST. So, it is locked up.

Perhaps I’ve selected too many apps to install. Does that mean I have to start over (since there is a ‘CANCEL’ button, or I kill YAST)?

I terminated YAST.

Continuing on, but stopping short of ‘smplayer’. Wow!!!

Steph

Continue to do that, allow vendor change to packman.

Maybe you should post repo details

zypper lr --details

‘libdvdnav4’ is not in the packman repository

Continuing on,

Steph

Okay, got to ‘smplayer’ and here are the following dependencies (there may be more; and no, I did not do anything except CANCEL OUT of Yast).

Waiting on advice,

Steph

I’m curious why there are (1)recommended architecture changes (from x86-64 to i586), and (2)does “uninstall evolution” mean the evolution I use to read my mail?

That looks OK. But I always disable the cd/dvd media, yours is #3

I have my Updates set to 99 priority, but that is mostly to deal with issues related to kde4.2.3

One thing you have to watch is sometimes updates provides a newer version of a package that you really want from Packman. So really some intuition is required to keep Packman versions. If you just keep an eye out for that you’ll be fine.

I had a similar problem and the essence of it is that you should not have both the packman and vlc repos active. Drop VLC you can get it from packman. The problem is the some of the packages are compiled with differently and this leadsa to all kinds of problems.

Drop VLC and reinstall everything from there from packman i will look for the thread later, urgent meeting…

Apparently you can select which repository you want a particular package updated with… just select the repository (and i586, i686, or x86_64) under the [Versions] tab associated with the selected package.

Who put all the x 's in the option ( )'s??

Are you _64 bit? I guess yes.

Are you talking about the smplayer dependency conflicts that I posted? The options were selected before saving the conflicts list to a file (and before cancelling out of yast).

Yes, my laptop is 64 bit (it was bought in 2008, and it has Intel Core 2 Duo (or whatever it says on my signature).

Steph
PS. I’ve since resolved the smplayer dependency conflicts, by selecting to have the i586 version of ‘libcaca’ replaced with the 64 bit version (don’t know how the i586 version got installed). Also don’t remember seeing the libcaca thing before, so maybe I over looked it last time. Continuing on…

I’ve completed the “Multimedia and Restricted Format Installation Guide”. And rebooted.

I will let you know how youtube functions later. Long day at work tomorrow though.

Later,

Steph
PS. And thanks!

Well done. It often looks really complicated but usually it’s just a matter of selecting the 1 conflict that is throwing everything else out.

Still same problems with youtube. Now if I reboot, it doesn’t seem to fix the problem (blank video screen with sound, or frozen video with no sound or choppy sound).

Unfortunately,

Steph
