New Installation: ATA bus, COMRESET failed, I/O, and other errors on boot and shutdown

Hello everyone, I just bought a new laptop that has a Samsung MZ7TE512 SSD and I installed opensuse 13.2 on it using the netinst iso. Almost every time I boot the pc up, but not always, I get a huge series of ata related errors and afterwards the computer sometimes manages to complete the boot successfully and load up plasma, sometimes it boots in a weird broken state where some applications might load but some others fail (ie firefox window opens up but plasma is hung, so no wallpaper and panels and it also gives me a lot of “this app crashed” windows) and sometimes it just gets stuck in the terminal screen and keeps spitting out ata errors without completing the boot proccess. I don’t know what logs are relevant here so I will include the lspci -vv output and dmesg. By the way I dont know if dmesg only shows the log of the last boot because this is one where the computer managed to boot after all. Please ask for any info you might need and I will post it here asap.

I use the ext4 filesystem an I the I/O scheduler is deadline, also the bios is set to AHCI mode.

The relevant part of the last dmesg (the errors are towards the bottom and as I stated above the PC booted this time so the more severe errors might not have shown up here):

One time that the boot failed and the pc remained stuck on this screen, after the last {DRDY} message I got this instead of the ata5: hard resetting link message:

ata5: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)
ata5: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)
ata5: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)
ata5: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)
ata5: reset failed, giving up
end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 2140152
Buffer I/O error on device sda1, logical block 10495

and then it hung there indefinitely (i think) so I had to keep the power button down to shut the pc down.

I use the ext4 filesystem an I the I/O scheduler is deadline, also the bios is set to AHCI mode

Does this indicate problematic hardware or is it a linux bug? I can return the laptop for a hardware check since it’s new but I would like to be sure the problem is not software related.
I will be happy to provide you with any other info you might need, and thank you all in advance for your help.

I note that you have both a NVIDIA nad Intel GPU is this an optimus??

If so did you install the normal NVIDIA driver??

I’m not sure at all. It is a Lenovo y50-70 and I haven’t installed any graphics drivers yet so I guess I’m running nouveau? It threw a couple of errors as well during boot but I didn’t include them in the op because char limit.

After a boot I sometimes change to TTY1 where the login prompt sits waiting and above it I can see the ata errors that I posted. If they aren’t too many I can also see some nouveau errors right above them. They contain stuff like:

nouveau E PIBUS]HUBO 0xnumbers 0xnumbers
nouveau E PIGRAPH]failed to load fuc409c
nouveau E DEVICE]failed to create 0xnumbers, -2
nouveau E DRM]failed to create 0xnumbers, -22
kvm: disabled by bios
kvm: disabled by bios

and then there is the normal prompt (ie now that the pc booted ok) or some ata5 errors like the ones i posted above and then the prompt.

If optimus which I can of think it is. Use bumblebee. DO NOT install the normal NVIDIA drivers. If it is not Optimus then disable one of the GPU’s and DO NOT use bumblebee. But my guess is that it is.

Can’t say that video is at the root of the problem but it may be

Thank you for your help, I’m gonna go give it a try and report back here with the results.

The same errors keep showing up, both nouveau and ata5, and I noticed that when the pc manages to boot and load plasma, firefox pops up with the “oops wanna try to reload the last session” message. If I click reload instead of close the tty1 gets flooded with ata5 error messages and then it freezes (or maybe it freezes if i Ctrl+C while it keeps throwing out errors). This happened twice in a row and the third time I just pressed close instead of reload and everything seems fine, even though i can see nouveau errors on the top of tty1 and ata5 errors on the dmesg output.

To sum up, after I installed bumblebee the computer froze once during boot, twice when I clicked reload session on firefox, and did one apparently successful boot, so I guess it didn’t make a difference.

Random error are very hard to diagnose. It is potential a hardware problem have you run the memtest? Should do it at least over night Are you dual booting? if so is Windows showing and troubles?

Run smartctl on the drive. Note because it is a SSD smart may be turned off to save writes but turn it on for a while (options in smartctl) and see if it shows any problems.

No I’m not dualbooting windows. The drive only has one ext4 for ‘/’ and one swap partition as well as a big amount of unallocated space inbetween. Will run smartctl and report back.

Only 2 partitions? Are you leaving enough space for temp files??

Yes, I was planning on fitting in a windows partition later on so I left a lot of space. The disk looks something like this:
128gb ext4 / | 400gb unallocated space | 8gb swap ]

I activated smart on the ssd, ran a --test=short and a --test=long on the disk and here are the results:

smartctl -a /dev/sda

I’m not sure but I think it looks ok?

Looks ok run the mem tests

I ran the memory test using the bootable usb that had the installation image on it. Memtest86+, I hope that’s the one you are talking about. It was completed without errors

Need to run over night a single pass may miss problems

Sorry for the nooby question, how will i know the culminative results of the tests? I mean, from that one run it looked to me like everytime a run reaches 100% its results will overwrite the previous ones. Are they all put in a log somewhere and how do I access it given that I run the tests from a usb?

I also want to thank you again for all your help. I really appreciate it

It will show any error

Yes.

Unfortunately that test runs completely inside the hard disk, it does
not test connection to the computer, which in your case is suspect. For
testing that, you need some other test software that does the same from
the computer, like seatools from Seagate. Maybe Samsung has an
equivalent: search their site.

Hello again, sorry for taking so long to reply. I thought I’d save myself some trouble and let the warranty take care of the issue. I honestly did not have the time and the nerves needed to troubleshoot it at home. I will update this thread if they fix it and tell me what the problem was or if it persists (god help us) even after the service. Thank you again for all the help you’ve offered me.

Not a bad idea.

As long as they don’t delete Linux and install Windows :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Description:
The IO operation at logical block address 0x10ce67a0 for Disk 0 (PDO name: \Device\00000033) was retried.

I started installing some drivers that looked relevant from the Lenovo website and, I don’t know how and why, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver seems to have fixed the problem completely. There hasn’t been a single occurence of the message on windows since the installation of the driver. That’s amazing news!

My problem is that I can’t seem to find an Intel RST driver for linux anywhere. On the Intel website they only talk about the dmraid and mdadm packets which, from what I understand, are specifically for managing raid setups. On windows the errors went away by just installing RST. How can I manage that on opensuse?

Thank you in advance for your help
