why was plasma-pk-updates replaced with Discover?

This was already explained here in the forum. This package is unmaintained upstream and not adapted for Plasma 6/Qt6. As it won‘t work with Plasma 6 it needed to be dropped.
And it is not replaced by Discover. It was just another tool which is no longer available…
it worked just fine after my update, is something amiss?
Whatever udate you mean…
After upgrade from Plasma 5 to Plasma 6 the applet directly disabled itself. It tells you that it is incompatible with Plasma 6 when you try to enable it again.
