This is a new thread after I realized that I added my comments to a sticky. Hopefully people will read the sticky and realize that they might encounter problems with upgrade.
I tried to upgrade this time instead of doing a clean install to 11.4
I upgraded my desktop - 64 bit and did it with zypper dup . it worked relatively smooth with no initial problems except the fact that at log screen there are some vertical bands which are overlapping each other and it doesn’t look nice which can be ignored for now.
I have 2 accounts on it and the other account when try to log in is completely black.
My user account was looking fine but after i started some applications(rdesktop or libreoffice) the screen gets completely screwed up.
I was able to stop all the processes remotely so now i’m able to work. not sure for how long.
I did the same on my laptop and I asked my son(9) to do the upgrade and i supervised him using zypper “in advance” and it seems fine so far no issues at all. - this is a 32 bit system.
I cannot see any issues other than the start screen which has some overlapping vertical bands. So this works fine.
Any help on how to fix my desktop ? It has an ATI card on it. should I reinstall the video card? It seems that only some things will screw the screen as I can work fine for now.
thanks
Ok what errors? Did you make the file executable? You always need to give files permission to run. Also need to run it as root so you need to use sudo or su before to become root.
did that. here is the error. not even sure if this is correct driver but the only one I found on AMD site. dan@aruba:/home/dan/Downloads:>./ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run

I don’t use ATI but that does look like an old version and may of the older versions will not work with the newer kernels since ATI has dropped support. Don’t know if this is one of them or not.
my problem occurs only when i start libreoffice and reading the sticky about update i was under the impression that that’s the root cause. I don’t have any other problems(well garbled screen at login but is not that important). the open office issue I described it in another thread under applications. I will ignore the ATI drivers for now if nothing else is blocking me but the libreoffice is something to be fixed. Thank you
well that might be the new artwork and is ok but when I start libreoffice or KRDC the artwork is on again in an ugly way. which logs could i check to see what is going on? in the /var/log/messages there is nothing. The screen is unusable and I need to exit via Ctrl-Alt-Backup.
