Zypper update broke NVidia drivers

I guess the answer is that people who want to avoid situations like these shouldn’t use a rolling-release distribution. On get.opensuse.org it is clearly stated that Tumbleweed is for developers and enthusiasts while Leap is recommended for “regular” users.

FWIW, I tried Fedora Plasma Desktop 42 (which caters to a more “regular” group of users) on the same PC (with the NVidia RTX 5060) and it didn’t even survive the first (required) reboot. That’s also a terrible new user experience. On Tumbleweed, I could at least rollback the system.

@ChaserHUN Maybe time to ratchet your skills up…

The advice to not use zypper up can be found here:

https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/tumbleweed/updating_upgrading_reverting/
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB%3AUpgrade_Tumbleweed

But I have to admit I also didn’t know that. Who reads TFM anyway?

Build20250909 with a matching version of the Nvidia open driver should be on the mirrors in the next few hours.

I downloaded a test of ISO 09092025 this morning and this included the rquired version of nvidia-open. NVIDIA driver working fine again.

I can confirm that zypper dup indeed works now.

So it is safe to update nvidia drivers again?

I’d say yes. (I’m the one who started this thread.) I did zypper dup half an hour ago and all is fine.

Still not good :frowning: Games run like sh…some won’t even start saying I need a card that supports opengl

The Nvidia driver works fine for me with:

nvidia-open-driver-G06-signed (580.76.05_k6.16.3_1 → 580.82.07_k6.16.5_1)

from the ISO 09092025.

But I don;t play games, sorry,

Hi,
I’m glad it works for you. Unfortunately it’s not the case for Slowroll (I’ve attached inxi output below). :frowning:
I’ve learned to live with this inconvenience - every time ‘zypper dup’ brakes the nvidia+kernel relationship. For some time I’ve even tried longterm kernel hoping for less problems but to my surprise it’s even worse (couple of times I was unable to ‘zypper dup’ without letting switch to default kernel because of the dependencies). I’ve tried few different approaches and all of them eventually failed.
My current approach to the problem is just install ‘nvidia-open-driver-G06-signed-kmp-meta’, which so far works. It downgrades the problematic duo (kernel+nvidia_driver) to working versions (as an example I’ve attached inxi output for today’s working versions ). The inconvenience is you eater have to select working kernel from boot menu or uninstall the newer to let the working one boot automatically - of course till next ‘zypper dup’ and whatever it brings.

Hi,
At first thank you for your time and I’m sorry but it’s going to be long post.
I’ve got the output you’ve asked for, but because multiple version of kernels and nvidia-open-drivers I’ve decided to do it twice with clean install both versions.
I’ve uninstalled all nvidia drivers and libs. In addition I’ve uninstalled all kernels except the latest default. Reboot.
I’ve installed ‘nvidia-open-driver-G06-signed-kmp-meta’ and as expected it pulled all necessary libs and additional packages including kernel. They are not the recent versions (nvidia 570.172, kernel 6.15.8) but after reboot all works.

zypper se -si kernel (it does not change for both cases so to make it clear I’ve split them separate for kernel and nvidia)

Now is time to have fun.
Time for ‘sudo zypper dup’. To my surprise it did not pull any updates except to ‘nvidia-open-driver-G06-signed-kmp-default’ v580.76.05. Looks like ‘nvidia-open-driver-G06-signed-kmp-meta’ works and holds the known working versions - kudos to devs. I just hope it would be updated more recent. Anyway… Myrlyn shows available newer driver so I’ve let it to update all the nvidia packages and remove the ‘meta’.
Unfortunately this breaks everything and it does not work on either kernels. After those updates I’m stacked with low-res screen and llvmpipe as an renderer.
In desperation I’ve tried ‘sudo dracut --regenerate-all -f’ but without any change.

Thank you, in advance, for any advises.

Please see all the outputs below - after all the updates

But… are you using Tumbleweed or Slowroll???

I’m using Slowroll.

Then next time open your own thread rather than attaching to a “Tumbleweed” tagged thread that has been solved meanwhile… anyway:

And why didn’t you stop there?

Use Tumbleweed then…

Use Myrlyn to revert Nvidia packages to a version matching the Slowroll nvidia-open-driver-G06-signed-kmp-meta.
