It looks like a me2 so hope the detail below might help.

The biggest issue at this point is not being able to install additional software via zypper or YaST

  • Segmentation fault (core dumped) with zypper install and also YaST install

The previous issue though related is “YaST is missing after update”

Where this is now, the latest steps in this issue:

  • Saved the downloaded rpms from /var/cache/zypper to a backup directory
  • Reinstalled and have a clean installation (openSuSE TW - gecko-rolling - Cinnamon)
  • It looks and runs amazingly smooth, love it.
  • Yast Control Center and all functionality is where it should be
  • Mapped the backup rpms as a local repository and gave it priorety
  • Ran zypper dup to update the system - it updated 1523 files
  • Disabled the local zypper backup repository
  • Ran zypper dup to update the system - it updated 18 files
  • I saved both zypper dups as a text file if anyone needs it

So far so good. Everything is working. The only thing that changed is it lost the openSuse Oxygen icons in the process

  • Using the YaST Control Center tried to install wine.
  • There were no exceptions or conflicts but the installation crashed before it was finished
  • Using the YaST Control Center tried to install gimp.

  • In Terminal ran zypper install q4wine, it failed.

Looks like it was not just me having this problem.
I had been trying to re-install Tumbleweed for about 4 days now and each time the installation got to a point, said an error occurred and would not go any further.

The DVD sized installation I had on my 8GB USB thumb drive from 20190307 kept getting errors yesterday so I gave up.
But, when I went to bed last night I got on the PC and tried one more time. I didn’t enable any repos nor did I install any DE just the bare necessities, I planned on installing Xfce, which I did.

I had never once got the G05 Nvidia driver to boot after installation so let Yast handle it. I just typed in “nvidia”, it said it was installing the G05 driver and I had high hopes that it pulled in all of the other packages better than installing it in terminal and it worked.
I expected to see a flashing underline cursor in the top left of the screen but, it never happened.

But, while I installed any and everything through Yast or terminal it got so far and then quit with Segmentation fault (core dumped).

I just restarted the process and it started where it left off. It did this many, many times until it finally finished installing.

Now I’ve got it almost where I want it but, I like to have Compiz, Emerald and the Fusion-Icon but, I’m leary of it not booting if I install those.

If it’s OK to ask here, which of these, if any, should I have disabled when doing a dup as I’m still kind of an openSUSE TW newbie.

I guess that segfault problem was/is world wide.

I worked my way through the segfaults. It did not present a pattern but seemed to segfault after downloading about 30 packages. I re-ran zypper dup after each segfault since I could see the cache of downloaded files grew after each zypper dup. It took about 6 re-tries before all packages were downloaded. Installation went normally and a reboot seems to show everything running alright.

I probably should have looked to see the size of the packages that downloaded before the segfaults, in case it was size not number of files that caused the problem. But that seemed like work, so I just kept running zypper dup to see what happened!

I had 4 segfaults while updating to 20190307 on Friday.

After each segfault, I just tried again. And it continued where it had left off. The previously downloaded packages were in the package cache, and were not downloaded a second time.

So I finished up with a good update.

I then updated another system, and that went without problems. But that’s because I share the package cache of NFS, so the second update did not have to download much since it could use the existing package cache.

I did a dup to 20190307 today on 32bit EXT4 host gx151 installation in my usual fashion, download in advance only for selected basesystem packages:

zypper -v in --download-in-advance zypper libzypp libsolv-tools rpm openSUSE-release
zypper -v in --download-in-advance device-mapper dmraid glibc lvm2 multipath-tools mdadm systemd udev

Then, DownloadAsNeeded (local default) for the rest. No interruptions resulted for the 1100+ packages upgraded or installed.

Successful here in basically the same way. Due to limited monthly data, I always save the downloads, and share those with other systems on our network. The first one took multiple tries but finally succeeded. The second one updated without a hitch.

I noted that libcurl was updated today without a change in TW version number.

I just installed openvpn via CLI and got this:

Around 190 packages downloaded today, and there were no segfaults.

Installations failing with the last two snapshots, Live ISO or 4GB Installer ISO - Install/Boot/Login - openSUSE Forums I am 100% convinced that my first errors in 2 years of using Tumbleweed and not being able to reinstall using any recent ISO (March 2019 … I found a live ISO from Nov 2018 and then had the segfault issues on the installed system when “dup’ing” … ) and this issue are 100% related and the same issue now.

The only reason i reformatted my perfectly working 2 year old TW Cinnamon install is that I wanted to switch to Gnome (will not give boring details why) and i figured starting fresh would be better

please note that I have seen a few posts that there may be an update to libcurl and that may already solve this but for anyone still having this issue, as others have done too it seems … just keep re-“sudo zypper dup” ing to get more and more packages … eventually when they are all cached the update will install them … that is the way I got around this hiccup

before I recently redid my TW install switching DEs and starting fresh (figured it’d be less messy that way, long term) … I wanted to test something in a VM and the install failed … .point is I see new ISOs with a libcurl update … I am NOT blowing away this current install (at least now i dont plan to) but I will test the new ISO (march 10th) in a VM and see if it works … if it does … I will be much happier and the fact these issues came up at the exact time i decided to redo my TW install … all came down to "bad timing for this libcurl issue " lol … nothing more

I was doing a dup the other day and one package was apparently not up to date and it said do this:

sudo zypper refresh --force

That cured that problem and everything updated then.
I just did the above and a dup this was what it installed without problems.

The following 13 packages are going to be upgraded:
  audacious-plugins audacious-plugins-extra conky ffmpeg-4 libavcodec58 libavdevice58 libavfilter7 libavformat58 libavresample4 libavutil56 libpostproc55 libswresample3 libswscale5

I’m pretty sure that’s a different problem from the one that was causing segfault.

That one happens occasionally, when a repo mirror is not fully up-to-date at the time that you start an update.
